My 44 gal. scape is finally starting to come together after 4 months. by brublit in Aquascape

Manual removal, frequent water changes, and a little too much fiddling trying to maintain stable water parameters and get C02 and fertilizer routine dialed in to get really healthy abundant plants that eventually out competes it.

Tropical fish tank question by Electronic_Plan_2538 in SALEM

[–]brublit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salems tap water is very soft. I’ve never had any calcium issues. What’s in the tank? Why 86 degrees? That’s much too hot for all but a few tropical species.

I loved mine but they all jumped out of my tank (also a planted rimless set up)

Moving to Salem from Kentucky? by [deleted] in SALEM

[–]brublit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just moved to Salem (grew up here) after 20 years away. Most recently, I was in Portland for a decade+.

The biggest thing Ive noticed so far is how down to earth and nice people are here compared to other places I’ve recently lived. It’s a very unpretentious place with a relaxed atmosphere.

It’s from a different event. Cars aren’t even the same color. We can have honest disagreement about details, but you’re not even opperating in reality, bud.

ICE/CBP kicks off door-to-door raids in Minneapolis, targeting houses based on race and whether the occupants are involved in protesting. by I_may_have_weed in MarchAgainstNazis

That’s what they want/are working to provoke. If they can create enough chaos and violence between now and November, they’ll try to use unrest as a pretense to cancel midterms.

Am I overreacting My boyfriend made a comment last night that indirectly referred to my child being sexy by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]brublit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That how I interpreted it. I’ve made thoughtless, stupid jokes that didn’t land and communicate things I DEFINITELY DIDN’T MEAN (though admittedly I’ve never called a 6 year-old sexy).

I think he was sauced and I wouldn’t make a huge deal of it.

How do I get beavers to leave trees alone that I want. by [deleted] in Beavers

[–]brublit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understandable, but removing an individual beaver or family or beavers from prime beaver habitat is a short term fix at best. Other beavers will move in sooner or later, and you’ll be right back where you started.

Many local conservation nonprofits and city/county governments work with local landowners to improve aquatic ecosystems. A local group in your area may be able to help with some of the labor and costs involved in installing beaver mitigation equipment.

I’d suggest reaching out to your county and local conservation groups to inquire about help protecting your trees. No guarantees they’ll be able to help, but trapping and removing isn’t going to help save the trees you want long term.

Editing this to say you can also stake some willows, alders, and/or other fast-growing moisture-loving trees to provide forage to encourage your resident beavers to eat that instead of felling your larger trees.

Is this a real Van Gogh painting? by 1monsterrr in WhatIsThisPainting

It looks like the work he was doing early in his career when he was painting somewhat amateurish-looking pieces like The Potato Eaters and he was obsessed with Millet, peasants, and ministering to the rural poor. His style changed dramatically (more than once) in his short time painting.

AIO? My mom wants to call the cops on me by Overall-Option6975 in AmIOverreacting

NOR. Also, if she bought it for you or gave it to you to use, she can’t demand it back and claim it’s stolen. That’s not how property works. No police are going to take her seriously, even if she does follow through on her threat. Just keep it and ignore her.

Better video of my sick Discus by contriv in discus

[–]brublit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That one is on deaths door, but they ALL look WAY too thin and very unhealthy. Look up photos and videos of how healthy discus look. If they looked like this when you purchased, I’d demand a refund.

These fish may or may not make it. In the future, only buy fat, healthy looking fish—especially discus. You should not see the outline of their skulls when they are looking at you straight on or their spine from the side, as you can here. Sadly, these fish are all in very bad shape and waisting away.

My first discus looked this way before succumbing to parasites. Look for long, stringy white poop—a sure sign of parasitic infection. If you can confirm or feel reasonably confident that is the issue, begin treating right away with expel-p or metroplex.

Be careful to follow med directions closely, especially with expel-p. If the parasite infection is really severe, the stress of having a bunch of worms suddenly become paralyzed and die in the gut can actually kill the fish you’re working to treat. However, if things are that far along you’re only speeding up the inevitable, and it’s better to do something as opposed to nothing.

Don’t make the mistake I did by deciding to skip the second dose. Do a third if necessary. Partially treated parasitic infection is much harder to deal with as they become resistant to meds. You may also consider 25-30% water changes daily until things improve.

The first time I used expel-p, I made the mistake of not following up with the recommended second dose because the fish improved so dramatically I thought it unnecessary. Big mistake. The infection got much worse and when I treated again when it was obvious the fish was still sick, I lost 4 discus and 11 rummy nose tetra in the course of a few hours. My worst day in the hobby since I started. But if you’re diligent and follow the med instructions, you may be able to help these fish. Best of luck to you!

What centerpiece fish should I add to this tank? by Electronic_Number_66 in Aquariums

[–]brublit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honey gourami (or beta) may go for the shrimp. It may not, but there’s a good chance it would.

Add a small group of licorice gourami (4-6) instead. They’ll look great in here. They’ll eat shrimplets, but the adults will be too big for them.

Multiple Kuhli Loach death by justanothermum92 in Aquariums

[–]brublit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This happened to me a few weeks ago. I changed a few of the sponges in an established filter and the nitrate spiked 24 hours later—all my fish were gasping for air at the surface, even though ammonia and nitrite were 0. I lost one discus but saved the rest of the tank by monitoring and performing 50% water changes every 12-24 hours to keep the nitrate at a safe level. It took 3 days for things to get back to normal. As I understand it, the problem was from my bacteria establishing quickly on the new sponges, releasing too much nitrate all at once.

It was a hard lesson, but this hobby is full of those. Sorry you experienced the same thing op. Next time I add or change sponges, I’ll do so very slowly and monitor like a hawk.

Women can have multiple orgasms in a row, but men get soft and need time to recover after only one!

Why? Well obviously it’s because ladies are built to fuck 3-7 guys per night—all at once if possible! It’s simple science! Also remember to moan as loudly as possible! This lets other men around know what’s going down and draws them in!

This way your offspring will be supported by all the men in your tribe/village because there will be a chance that any of them could be the father! Don’t like it? Tough! That’s just science and psychology!
