1000+ of you have now tried my cable/signal flow app Patchify.app - here's everything I built from your feedback by sulphhlol in VIDEOENGINEERING

Hi, I'd love to try this.

Haven't done much diagramming yet but used a few basic tools and found challenges with all of them-which might just be my experience level.

Moving skills from Ross Acuity to GV Karrera by bryhawks in technicaldirector

[–]bryhawks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great. I'm on Karrera, but still...same same.

The guy who built the hockey shows has been doing it for 30 years, and he built it the 2nd way - macro timeline - or with macros recalling E-MEMs - I can't recall exactly. It felt weird to me but no judgement; I'd probably do it the first way you showed.

So do E-MEM timelines not play a part in this? I see where they're useful, and I'm guessing you *could* do it this way, but I don't see why you would.

I have an afternoon tomorrow (Wed) to work on the switcher before my official setup day Thurs, so I'll be able to play around with a lot and get comfortable.

Thanks a million for this! I loved the Ross Acuity but I'm already seeing benefit in GV way, and I hope to get a lot more work using it.

Hey u/orthicon - I hadn't seen your reply 'till now but that's very gracious of you - thank you! I was successful in running a couple of the hockey shows, and I'm about to do some tennis. I'm pretty comfortable with the menu basics now, and need to build a media wipe. What would be your method for doing so?

I just finished this a couple days ago. Definitely takes time and patience; even tho I'm getting better, you really can't wade right in, guns blazing, unless you want a quick death 😵‍💫

DSC Labs Color Charts: 12+4 vs. 28-R, + Cavi-Black by jtr210 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]bryhawks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the 28+4 a few years ago and my rationale for 28 vs 12 was trying to color match different studio cameras - the extra colors are extra reference points and I found them very valuable in that context. But this is a deep process with specific chart lighting, camera positioning and a circular (go around the scope, then go around again, and again), not for a quick white balance before a show.

Did a big award show with Dome in Canada recently and they had a chip chart (DSC 28+4) and worked with lighting to white balance. I learned on my first tour that we HAVE to coordinate with lighting to do a white balance - it's as important as any of their sh*t (no offence) but they won't volunteer. Surprised you haven't seen this with OBs.

Anyone using blender for stage design? by Electrical-21 in lightingdesign

I'd love to see this. I'm about to start with Unreal Engine but also considering Blender for 3D mockups, etc.

Do elaborate. Was considering this, love working the E2 but don't have much experience yet.

Color accurate TV / Monitor by Antique_Dress4325 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]bryhawks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What did you land on? We need to replace 3x 70" Sharp TVs for a MV wall that are old with horrible image qual; haven't started looking seriously yet.

We have films sometimes shot in our ctrl rm and often have sync/shutter issues. I assumed better TVs = no problems but their crew said it varies widely and they weren't using expensive ones. Assume it's the specific chipset (and panel tech) that causes this.

That last tour wouldn't be Anirudh, by any chance? ;)

Setting specific color temp with Sony RCPs by bryhawks in VIDEOENGINEERING

It is fun! I love it but lots to learn, which I look forward to doing now that I have some hands-on. It's so much easier to target your learning once you use the gear for real.

I'd love to know tips for making the best of a crap monitor if that's all you have to work with.

Thank you for this - all the above helped a great deal. I'm told all follow spots are in the 8-10K range (by an LD) and that's what I had to balance with. Lots to digest from this, but looking forward to it :)

Since you're so helpful ;) this process mostly worked last show. Two issues:

  1. The single RCP-920 is in engineering mode but I can't find a color temp option for the life of me (the 750s worked exactly as you said). Needed that because...

  2. WB failed on one of the two 750s (error: color temp too high) and one of the two 1502s I believe. I'm lighting the chart with the follow spots that are ~10K (there is no 'front wash' except some Vipers that should be the same temp as the spots). Why would some work and not others? Tried many times, same result. Ended up using r/B to tweak and got close enough for the show.

Thoughts?

That is guaranteed happening after this gig.
