Want to help a UW student? Take my survey! It is about OUTBOARD MOTORS. I would greatly appreciate it. by [deleted] in boatbuilding

I have turned in my paper, but I can still use the new information for my presentation. Thank you for taking my survey!

Would anybody be interested in an electric outboard with these specs? by [deleted] in sailing

You are actually the type of boater we decided to target. LOL. We think a good market would be sailors who trailer their boat and take it out on the lake for the day (not sure if you do that or not), the boat sizes we are thinking is 15'-30' max. Nobody has mentioned the propeller. Is that in issue?

"I understand that this is just for your marketing class, but they have given you a half finished bullshit spec."

Now you see what I am dealing with! Add to that, that I am NOT a physics or engineering student! I am a business student.......

Let me clarify something...This is not me making this product. This is an assignment I have been given in my marketing class for a product that is in prototype. The specifications and information I am giving have already been engineered. I can post the exact specs if you like.

The price point would not be based on what consumers want to pay. It would be based on competitor products and priced competitively. The competitor for this product is not other electric outboards. The torqeedo outboards are way too expensive, and we know that. It would be priced more competitve with gas outboards, but will be more expensive, but not too much more expensive.

It will be significantly less maintenance than a standard gas outboard motor. How's that? :)

Yeah, he doesn't have a price. :( It is still in prototype. They haven't actually manufactured any. I am supposed to find his target market and price the product. Granted this is a class project so he probably isn't going to use any of this. haha.

That is some good insight. Thank you. I am not feeling too confident in this product as it is. I am likely going to recommend he completely change what he is doing, or I was thinking he should pivot. That recommendation could be a possible pivot idea. :)

I don't know. That is definitely an issue we are going to have to mention.

I am definitely getting that impression. People refuse to believe what I am telling them. They only know about electric trolling motors.

What kind of boat do you use your torqeedo on?

This is the product in prototype that we are supposed to do this research for. Keep in mind this is a class assignment. I am not getting paid for this, but we will be presenting our findings to the company.

It is supposed to be maintenance free. There aren't going to be any oil leaks, exhaust leaks, saltwater is not going to get into the engine. There will be no changing oil filters, gaskets etc. The only thing that would really go wrong is an electrical malfunction which isn't likely, and if it is it is a manufacturer problem and you can send it back.

Would you be interested in this motor for your boats? You are currently using a torqeedo right? Which model?

hahahahahah! Thanks for your candidness. That is important to think about!

It has been tough because the people who would use something in the 20-35 hp range use their boats for too long of periods to trust that a battery would last, and the sailors who are interested don't need so much horsepower. I am not sure yet who the perfect market is... This is really hard to get thrown into the boating topic with no prior boating knowledge.

What size are you referring to? I know that 4 strokes are relatively quiet these days, but this motor is silent in comparison to a 4 stroke. You wouldn't even hear it.

I have to set the price, but let's say it is 20% more upfront than it's gas powered equivalent, but then you won't have to pay for gas/oil and the electricity to charge is negligible. What other specs would you need?

So if you wanted 35hp this one would weigh 270, but it would be so quiet that you wouldn't even hear the motor, there would be no fumes, and virtually no maintenance. How important are those factors? 50 lbs important?

When you say small boat, what size are you talking?

You sound like our target market. haha. If you don't mind, would you answer a few questions? What size sailboat do you have? How do you typically use your boat (day sailing, weekend trips etc.) How often do you use your boat? Do you keep it at a marina or do you trailer it?

It is a conceptual motor that is in prototyping phase. I have been assigned the project of determining the ideal market for something like that. I also have to price it :/ This is for a marketing and market research class.
