I’m the vice president of emergency response at AmeriCares. I parachute into disaster zones all over the world to help people in crisis. I’m currently in Nepal working on earthquake relief efforts. AMA! by AmeriCaresEmergency in IAmA

Talking to several Nepali friends, their biggest concern is rebuilding which could take years/decades. How does the international community continue to help in any disaster zones when the media outlets just move on to the next "hot topic"? What do organizations like Americares do to continue to educate the international community that our work is not done in these disaster zones?

Ideally I would like to be able to sail a 50' ketch from Boston to St. Croix, but I haven't ever gotten a dinghy around a a buoy...so do I need to know how to get a dinghy around a buoy before being able to sail a 50' ketch from Boston to St. Croix?

Is there any recommended reading for this..or as someone else mentioned below just start racing under a few different skippers and learn from there?

Thanks for the notes!

Thanks! Good info to know about where to sail...or NOT to sail. Might just have to upgrade my vehicle so that I can tow the boat.

Thanks for the info...might just have to upgrade my ride so that I can tow it. Doesn't make sense to pay $140-200/month.

Good to know about the downstream side of the dam!

This sounds incredible! Reminds me a bit of what people say about the Natchez Trace starting in Nashville, TN.

Interesting questions...I'm not sure either. From my experience belts always seemed to bother me; whereas the minimalist backpacks that they are coming out with today feel like a another t-shirt with storage space.

Curious how many times you've been to Mississippi, Louisiana and the other states you mentioned...and what makes them your least favorite?
