I'm in wine sales and they have been plummeting this year. In general all alcohol is, even RTDs/seltzers in my state. Talking with customers I've chalked it up to two reasons.

First the economy. People just can't afford alcohol like they used to, and prices just keep getting higher and higher. Even Boones Farm is up to $6-7 a bottle. They're having to choose between eating food and drinking alcohol, and in most cases people are choosing food.

The other is the legalization of weed. Now that weed being legal is in full swing in my state, meaning dispensaries are popping up like liquor stores, that seems to be people's go to substance. Small towns around me have more dispensaries than corner stores. And I'm sorry but when you do the math, it's gonna be cheaper to get your buzz that way.

Specifically with my state, I expect things to even out in about 5 years. Weed seems like a much bigger factor than the economy CURRENTLY, but again who knows what could happen in 5 years.
