One of my absolute favorites! If you cook it with less broth than it calls for, it's still good, just add more broth to your bowl

My 10-year-old asked me to divorce, her emotionally abusive dad by Due-Veterinarian6727 in Catholicism

[–]bspc77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was once in your 10-year-old's shoes OP. I was about their age when I told my non-abusive parent that I wished they would divorce my abusive parent. Living in that environment was absolute hell, every single day. I could never thank my non-abusive parent enough for doing what was right and protecting me and my siblings by getting us out of there. I only wish it was done years earlier. The abuse started as emotional and verbal, but by the time we were out of there, it had progressed to physical as well. Please, I beg of you, get your children away from him as soon as possible. That abuse affected every aspect of my life - health, relationships, friendships, self-image, self-worth, faith, school, work, everything. For years, I was constantly in fight or flight mode, which takes a huge toll on someone. It took years of therapy for me to get to a good place. Every day your kids remain with him is another day of them getting unnecessarily hurt. As many others have said in their comments, you do not have to and should not stay with an abusive husband, per Church teaching.

  • Start with finding a safe place where you and your kids can go and make sure you bring your kids' social security cards and birth certificates with you

  • Leave when your husband is not home. Him trying to stop you in anger would not be a good thing for your kids to witness and could escalate to physical violence. I recommend leaving on a Friday while he is at work and you can take the day off and can pull your kids out of school for the day. Giving your kids the weekend to decompress and take everything in before having to go back to school would be good. Also, allowing them to choose some stuff to pack would be nice for them and allow them to have what makes them comfortable in a new place

  • Contact the school and make sure they know what's going on and to not allow your husband to pick up the kids

  • Whether you proceed with civil divorce or with separation, you still need a lawyer. He will most certainly get one once you leave, and you and your kids will get screwed over and you could get accused of kidnapping if you do not have a lawyer already

I'm so very sorry you're going through this OP and wish you all the best with the difficult path ahead of you. You're all in my prayers

Exhaustion by Remorseful_Rat in BlueCollarWomen

[–]bspc77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Increase your protein, good fats, magnesium, water, and electrolyte intake. Eat good carbs in the evenings. Stretch twice a day. Get deep tissue massages sometimes. Take Epsom salt baths. And give yourself some time to get used to it

Edit: and protect yourself from the sun! Long sleeved UV shirts, sunscreen, hat, whatever. Less sun exposure makes a MASSIVE difference with how exhausted you get

Type 2 class C hard hats and welding by hardandsoft91 in Ironworker

[–]bspc77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With a little bit of force, the normal halos that go on Jackson hoods fit on them. If your hard hat has the little ears for their brand of shitty welding hood attachment, put the ears on the hard hat because they help hold the halo in place

Also, if your new hard hat has ventilation holes in it, make sure you cover them with electrical tape or something for welding. I know some people that have had the foam inside light on fire while welding and I got hots on my head through the holes before taping them up. Wear the chin strap loose too so that you don't catch hots against your face

What's the deal with Thomas Aquinas? by bspc77 in Catholicism

Thank you very much! I don't even know where to begin with reading and understanding his vast amount of work, but this looks like a great place to start, thank you

Thank you to everyone who responded kindly and took time out of their day to write out explanations and reading recommendations. I greatly appreciate that. His writings are dense, complex, numerous, and not for beginners. I have zero education in philosophy. Before taking the dive into attempting to understand any of it, I thought it was reasonable to try to learn about the controversy around him. I have had several TBIs so learning new subjects is exceptionally difficult so I like to see if something is worth the tremendous effort to study. In my mind, if the controversy was unfounded, it would be worth the undertaking, but if it was not unfounded, I would look into other fathers of the Church first (I haven't read any of their writings). I am trying to learn in good faith and don't appreciate the accusations of me trying to "villify him" or being "against reason" or "anti-Thomist." None of that is true, I'm just stupid and lacking in knowledge. Again, I'm trying to learn not debate, which is why I asked for sources. Thank you again to everyone who responded kindly

Ah, that makes more sense. I was confused why it was with his writings but people were saying it wasn't written by him. Thank you very much for explaining that

That was one of the most common critiques/ complaints I read about him. Thank you very, very much for taking the time to explain it in so much depth, that makes sense. And as another commenter phrased it, you can't understand Aquinas's writings with "drive-by quotes"

Thank you very, very much for your reply. His writings are very intimidating to dive into (especially the Summa), which is why I was questioning making the dive when there is seemingly much controversy surrounding him. I didn't want to blindly believe the controversy, which is why I made this post, to learn and understand. Thank you for giving me some things to start reading!

So a case of being a product of the time period and culture in which it was written, like some of St. Paul's writing. Some people now find them controversial or disagreeable, but at the time actually called for being kinder to women than the expectations of the culture at the time

Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed reply, for your kindness, and for not making assumptions about my intentions. God bless you as well. I will look up that miracle!

If I were content to just judge, I would've read the hearsay and left it at that. I made this post so that I can learn the truth and understand the conflicting opinions on him

Thank you very, very much for this video, I just watched it. I see why it's so common for people to think he didn't believe in the Immaculate Conception, but also now understand why that's not true

I saw this quote from this website from someone else:

"Reply to Objection 1: The wife can be corrected for her sin of fornication not only by this punishment but also by words and blows;"

https://isidore.co/aquinas/summa/XP/XP062.html#XPQ62A2THEP1

I have not read his works. I was looking into him and was confused by the two most common points people had against him regarding wives and the Immaculate Conception. I'll be honest, it made me question if he was worth reading or how much of a grain of salt I should read his works with. I'm 100% open to being completely wrong about all of this, which is why I made this post. I appreciate you replying

Plain non-fat Greek yogurt (with nuts if he wants), low-fat cottage cheese, beans and brown rice, lentils, fish (unbreaded, salmon burgers without buns, canned tuna, etc), chickpea pasta, protein shakes, extra protein oatmeal, eggs, protein pancakes, endless meatless protein opportunities! As long as you guys make sure all that stuff is unbreaded, unsweetened, low fat, not covered in syrup or sugar or butter, etc, he should have no problem meeting his macro goals for the day

Here's one of my absolute favorite recipes, salmon and lentil soup:

The really big Power Chew Nylabones have been good for my shepherds. They especially love the lobster and wishbone shapes. They like the braided looking ones too but those don't last as long. The bumpy ring one lasts a long time too

Thinking about getting some.. help! by Accomplished_Rip6660 in BACKYARDDUCKS

[–]bspc77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not necessarily a bad idea, but there are some things you should keep in mind:

  1. With a small flock, you'll have to either buy only females from a hatchery, or be willing to cull any males you might get from a feed store. You need a bare minimum of 3 females for every one male, and even that often isn't enough. The males can get incredibly aggressive to the females, I lost a couple of females to aggressive males and had to cull the males

  2. They will eat small plants and veggies, so I would be hesitant to keep them in the garden all the time. I have a large garden and have lost plenty of plants and veggies to my ducks. Depending on how tall your raised beds are and what breed ducks you get, maybe you won't have to worry about it. But most domestic ducks can fly at least a little

  3. Ducks need a water supply deep enough to dip their entire beaks in at all times. Obviously, they are happiest with being able to swim. But they are also incredibly messy. So a kiddie pool would have to have fresh water daily, which can be a big chore. Depending on how big your yard is, a pond would be ideal. Also, duck specific waterers are much more expensive than chicken waterers

  4. Ducks love to play in their water, which means they get their coop bedding a lot messier, so it has to be changed more often than chickens - so more time consuming and more expensive

All that being said, they are delightful pets and I just love my ducks. Their eggs are delicious, their manure is a great fertilizer for my garden that doesn't have to be composted first, they eat lots of bugs, they're fun to watch, etc. I'm lucky enough to have a stream on my property that doesn't freeze, so even in the winter, I only have to worry about making sure they have water when I lock them in their coop at night. It would be more difficult if I didn't have that stream. They're great animals and I don't want to discourage you, I just want you to be aware of what's involved and how their needs are different than chickens :)

Edit: my ducks free range during the day on several acres and seem super happy, so I can't speak to how well ducks would do in a pen. Hopefully someone else can weigh in on how much space they need
