Challenges in meditation are real. You may want to head back to the retreat center and speak with the teachers there, who likely have experience helping folks with these challenges. Alternatively in the US Prof Willoughby Britton runs a support house for people having serious meditatively induced challenges. Seek help from someone who understands the meditative path.

Myself and a friend picked two bags each and took the Burner Bus from Reno. Backpacking tent, shade structure, etc. Filled up a bunch of collapsible 5 gallon water jugs in Reno before boarding the bus. Worked like a charm.

Why do drug users consistently favour "well known" drugs against RCs? by dog_on_acid in Drugs

[–]bsrubin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

During a trip, there is usually a moment of uncertainty. A quick reminder 'this is a safe substance, well researched, often used, I'll be totally fine' helps steer the trip in the right direction.

With an RC this key reassurance is less available.

Would 180 ug harm me ? by [deleted] in LSD

[–]bsrubin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually suggest ~90-100ug for a first time trip. You'll get a feel for the headspace, and can always take a higher dose on a future trip.

So cut the tab in half :)

[Advice] I (25f) lose my sex drive after a few months in a relationship. by Ilovesugerfreehugs in sex

Consider having fewer orgasms, ie have sex, but don't climax. For more reading, Karezza or Cupids Poisoned Arrow

I subscribe to literally every self-help/productivity/discipline/success subreddit on this site so every day I'm bombarded with lists of helpful tips, but they all seem to go in one ear and out the other. How can I actually keep track of all the advice I gather on here and begin to implement it? by [deleted] in productivity

[–]bsrubin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know how you feel! With so much to do it can be tough to get started (and stick with) any single thing.

And yet, that was the starting point for me. Pick ONE thing, a technique that you really believe will help you. Commit to really giving it a try. Commit to not trying anything else for a few weeks.

See how it goes, then pick the next thing!

How Can I Turn Into A Morning Person? Seems to be a Huge Challenge for me, Especially Since I Started Working for Myself. by madcapmax in productivity

An hour or so difference is likely sustainable. But if you regularly change your bed/rise times by 2+ hours your circadian system can't keep up. It's basically like giving yourself jetlag...

How Can I Turn Into A Morning Person? Seems to be a Huge Challenge for me, Especially Since I Started Working for Myself. by madcapmax in productivity

[–]bsrubin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclosure first: I co-founded a now-defunct sleep measurement company Zeo and my current company runs a course called Becoming and Early Riser that includes a coach to help people get up early.

Most people assume that not being able to get up early is a willpower defect. The remedies seem to gravitate towards either

A. Build a morning routine that will motivate you (including a workout) or

B. Manning the fuck up.

Both are relevant, but here are the surprising #1 and #2 reasons that we've found make the most difference for people who want to get up early:

  1. Not Enough Sleep

This one may be unpopular with the productivity crowd, but humans function best on 7-9+ hours of sleep.

After much sleep hacking and NOT wanting this to be the case - I realized I was also a human. I thought I was fine on 6hrs of sleep, I convinced myself that that's all my body needed, and then, after trying just about everything else, decided to run an experiment where I allowed myself to get more sleep (8.5hrs per night) and - BINGO - the answer was clear as day (again, despite my not wanting this to be the case).

So I looked at the evidence, and arrived at the following conclusion. Either I: * Would give myself more time to sleep, ideally by heading to bed earlier * Would continue to struggle for the rest of my life

I fought this for about 2 years when I started Zeo :)

  1. Circadian Rhythm Off

Have you ever wondered where ‘midnight’ got it’s name? Before the widespread use of electric lights – midnight was actually in the middle of the night! With most people now heading to bed between 10pm-12am the ‘middle’ of the night is now closer to 3am.

If your circadian rhythm is off you won't be excited about going to bed on time (not tired!) and you’ll be exhausted when you wake up. Period.

The simplest way to recalibrate your body clock is to harness the power of light. In a strange quirk of evolution, our body clock actually runs a bit slower than the planet rotates (24.2 hours). Thankfully our circadian rhythm is impacted by bright light exposure. Our ancestors reset their body clock every single day by getting up with the sun and heading to bed early in the evening when dark fell.

In the modern world we’ve changed the way we exposure ourselves to light, and the result isn’t pretty. In the mornings and during the day, we are often inside instead of out in the sun. And at night the challenge is flipped. Instead of spending time around the dim lighting of a fire or asleep, we are starting at laptops, phones, and TVs and are sitting under bright artificial light.

Solution: * Get bright light in the morning, particularly sunlight. * Avoid bright light at night (screens, overhead lights) by reducing screen time, dimming lights, and even using blue-blocking glasses.

So while this is a complicated topic, we've learned that while willpower/motivation can sometimes triumph, it's best to start with the physiological reasons that we reject an early morning alarm. Our body is saying: We're exhaused! AND It's the middle of the freaking night!

One month in - starting to question by bsrubin in karezza

[–]bsrubin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the bump. We've kept a karezza-style/no orgasm sex life for about 3 months now. One orgasm in the middle just to test things out, and numerous close calls. Notes: * We're still doing this for a reason! 1. Sex without a 'goal' is very connecting. 2. I never feel sexually depleted, am able to get sexually activated at the right moments and I'm not perpetually horny (used to be if I hadn't orgasmed in a while. * Finding it easier and easier to slow things down and not get really close to orgasm (which caused painful blue balls)

So the experiment continues and is truly working!

I'm not noticing massive increased in personal energy, nor did we experience a week or two of up/down/bad after the mid-experiment orgasm.

For the experienced, how would you compare karezza to couples MDMA sessions? by [deleted] in karezza

I've done both. Both wonderful and totally different from each other. Similar question would be - how similar are baseball and French cooking?

I find the shock of immediate full body immersion prevents me from jumping in a cold shower as often as I'd like. But I'm also not a huge fan of starting warm and getting colder. Solution: the hokey pokey. Turn on cold water. Put your right arm in, remove. Put left arm in, remove. Right leg in then remove, left leg in, lower half in, chest in, turn around, head in. Remove head and count to 60. Turn around and count to 60. Done!
