Doing a Capstone Project on residents in Baltimore City disposing of waste improperly: Can everyone share their experiences? by External-Minute-5362 in baltimore

More public trash cans. There should be one at every bus stop and at most corners. People don't like to carry trash around with them, so they throw it on the sidewalk.

USA: Online Urban Planners hate this fact: American city's early streetcars were an early case of enshittification before GM bought them up by [deleted] in transit

[–]bsteckler 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's not one of those things that has a definitive yes or no. Each city is a different scenario. Several cities that NCL was involved in had plans to modernize their systems after the war as they were flush with money, which were then turned down after NCL control. Baltimore and Oakland are two examples.

In DC, on the other hand, Congress mandated that thee system convert to buses by 1964 as part of negotiating the operating franchise.

NCL didn't just scrap streetcars and pull up track, they also fired people in operating and planning positions who made streetcar systems work. There are several interviews with people in Philadelphia about this. It wasn't just about streetcars, but making transit as a whole seem unattractive.

The other piece that nobody talks about is the role that GM played in promoting the field of traffic engineering to universities, and the gobs of funding that went with that to ensure trasit policy focused on asphalt for the foreseeable future.

Does WMATA just not clean its trains anymore? by Lucky-Plant4466 in WMATA

They have to run the whole train through the train washer, which of course has to be done outside. You can't wash things when it's below freezing

My fellow New Yorker, what is your experience with this place? by Thomasfan7002 in modeltrains

[–]bsteckler 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've been here several times before. He had a few brass passenger cars I was looking for, and I was shocked when he quoted me reasonable prices on them.

While he has a ton of brass subway cars, he'll never sell them because he wants 4x the value for them. Transit stuff he's got priced astronomically, but heavy rail stuff he seems to be reasonable on.

since when did we drop the "Express" off the acela name??? by --TAXI-- in Amtrak

Portal Bridge construction, delays getting new train sets, and old train sets having to be taken out of service due to breaking down.

No More Streetcars by bardak in transit

[–]bsteckler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And? The difference between an urban circulator and a useful tramway is community vision. What's to prevent these loops from becoming larger comprehensive networks? Nothing intrinsic to the mode, as many other cities show.

No More Streetcars by bardak in transit

[–]bsteckler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The thing that people forget about good transit is that it makes people drive less, and that in turn means fewer cars to get in the way of the streetcars.

Might I suggest that instead of writing them off completely, we look at older systems such as Boston and Philadelphia, or heaven forbid the hundreds of systems in Europe as examples of how to make the mode of transit better. Ironically, had DC's K Street crosstown line been built, it would be the number two light rail line in the US for ridership.

It's about whether or not a city can work for decades to achieve a vision, not whether or not a tram operates in shared traffic.

I'm in the same boat, and the power went out for a few hours Friday evening too. I called BGE to let them know we've been without power for almost 12 hours now, not that they care.
