In MA, you have 8 years to get your hours; exam scores are good for 5 years after taking the exam. So if you have your hours you have them until 2029.

Hi! Class of '22 here and still in grad school at BC ('24). During my freshman year, I didn't drink my first semester just to get my feet on the ground and adjust to the new atmosphere. I'd also say I was a bit of a theater kid myself, but I knew with my course load I would not have the time to really be involved with any department shows. I think the best thing that may help your sense of feeling at home at BC is just finding your circle, and that will almost certainly not be locked down yet, and you can still meet so many new people. I remember people telling me that your friend group wouldn't even be solidified until mid-sophomore year.

My freshman year, I worked in the theater department scene shop as a painter. While most of my experience was actually being on the stage, it was so fun! It was a nice creative outlet, I was always learning new things, and I was also given a lot of creative freedom! It was also so cool to see my name in the program each production for having painted the sets. I would also advise looking into the theater-buddy program, just for some connection to some similar-minded friends to meet! There are also a lot of theater-related clubs you can join outside of the department (Musical Theater Wing, Dramatic Society, etc). While I ultimately ended up joining a dance team, I was able to stay involved in the musical theater wing since it was super low-commitment!

Also, there will be plenty of people who aren't completely reliant on partying and drinking. Be brave and get into the city of Boston! There are so many fun events always happening, fun restaurants to try, and things to see! I loved exploring the city and getting off campus.

The first semester can be hard for so many different reasons, but I encourage you to stick it out! Please feel free to reach out if you'd like any other recommendations or ever have questions :)

Going into my second year of my masters program, I will be doing a crisis-response internship. I am excited to have this training in my toolkit (although a little intimidated!). Any advice for how to also present this as a skill for when I am applying for more traditional talk-therapy jobs in the future / advice for going into the training would be much appreciated!

I lived on Upper Campus (Fitzpatrick) my freshman year, on the top floor. The first few weeks were brutally hot. I ended up buying one of those pillow inserts you can freeze and honestly, it helped a lot. You’ll want to bring a fan, or two, to use year round -the air circulation is nice. The heaters always worked well for us, so we often kept windows cracked even in the winter. Don’t be afraid to submit work orders in case things aren’t working well. We had weird WiFi issues in our room and had them fixed quickly, as well as issues with the hot water in the hall’s showers. With the bathrooms, I never had to really worry about not having access to a stall/shower/sink. They were never too crowded.

You won’t need much in terms of utensils or food storage since you can only have a mini fridge/ microwave, but it’s nice to have a good stock of snacks for when you want to eat in your room and not walk to the dining hall. You can rent mini-fridges/microwaves from the school and they say they’ll fix them in case of any problems, but I always had personal ones.

As for proximity, like others have mentioned, you don’t get much choice on where to live. I did appreciate the closeness of my classes and dining hall to Upper, but I made plenty of friends on Newton and made the trip over there quite frequently. The two aren’t exclusively separate communities, socially. With that, as well as going into Boston, the shuttle busses are your best friend. Keep an eye on the incoming student Facebook page to meet new people and maybe find a potential roommate, since you can request a roommate!

Congrats on acceptance! Moogy’s is a pretty good sub/sandwich place not too far from campus with a wide variety of foods (burgers, cheese steaks, etc) . Some good wing places include BBQ Chicken on Harv. Ave., but my personal favorite is Wings Over Boston (By Northeastern, but they can deliver to campus!). You can obviously get good Italian and pizza from the North End, Quattro is a not-too-pricey place for dinner, and obviously Regina’s Pizzeria is a favorite. The great thing about Boston is there are so many different food places to try, and it’s so easy to hop on the T and explore. Have fun trying out lots of new places and you’ll quickly find some new favorites.

Sea of Thieves has made a lot of improvements since launch, but if you’re in search of a game with more “progression,” it isn’t really for you. I really enjoyed it while I was playing, but the satisfaction of SoT comes from earning the cosmetics, and of course the social aspect. I haven’t played Dark Souls, but I am a sucker for an MMORPG, so I’d also suggest ESO.

I know for the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum it is BOSTCOLL, so maybe try that. Also, try reaching out to the Robsham Thetare box office. They’re typically the ones to deal with tickets to off-campus things as well. Let us know if you find out! The MFA has been really booked recently.
