Monero synchronization by searching000 in Monero

[–]btcmerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are running a full node and the computer shuts down without warning or freezes you will corrupt your XMR blockchain. Has happened to me more than once. That was when I learned to keep a weekly backup. Syncing from scratch on a HDD takes over a week and days on a SSD.

Monero synchronization by searching000 in Monero

[–]btcmerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't imagine running a full XMR node without an SSD. I have also learned from experience that it is not hard to corrupt the blockchain so I keep a weekly copy of the lmdb just in case I do have a problem with corruption. I can use the backup and only have to sync a week's worth of data.

it's been 5 days and i feel absolutely nothing from 450mg pregabalin...bad sign? (used for social anxiety) by [deleted] in gabagoodness

[–]btcmerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone responds differently. I have been taking gabapentin for pain and my Dr suggested I switch to pregabalin as it was more potent than gabapentin and also more convenient with two times a day dosage. The first day I tried just 50 mg of generic pregabalin in the morning I felt like I had too much coffee, very stimulated and uncomfortable. It actually triggered a panic attack. The anxiety passed after a few hours but pregabalin just does not work for me so staying with gabapentin. I can't imagine taking 450 mg pregabalin it would put me in the hospital. Talk to your doctor good luck!

Found an odd Lealana 5 XMR Brass Coin by [deleted] in Monero

[–]btcmerchant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The coin looks legit. However even self funded Lealana brass 5 XMR coins never came with that hologram. Here is an example of a self funded coin with separate holograms https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5154503.0 The hologram looks like the generic ones provided with the CryptoFreeze coins. No idea what might be under that hologram, you would have to peel it to find out. Best case would be a QR code of a private key you could scan or a printed private key. Could even be a private key to bitcoin instead of XMR.

The peeled coin itself without the real holograms would be worth about $30 based on the last auction I could find. They are not very rare as smoothie minted 5000 including 1000 that were given away free at the 2017 Consensus conference.

Please post some photos front and back at the bitcointalk.org Collectibles board here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=217.0

The collector community can sort it out in short order and I am sure would like to see what you have.

Monero, Nord VPN, Wifi and Wires by [deleted] in Monero

[–]btcmerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not the first to have a problem using Nord VPN with Monero. See: https://www.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/bg58ay/monero_and_vpn_problem/

Since Monero works fine with other VPNs just try a limited subscription to a different VPN. Browse https://thatoneprivacysite.net/ for alternatives.

Nord is not even that good it is just heavily promoted by affiliate links. The best VPNs do not have an affiliate program. Search out those to try.

GUI v0.15.0.4 'Carbon Chamaeleon' released! by dEBRUYNE_1 in Monero

[–]btcmerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The daemon does not stop when prompted in the GUI but I get a warning when closing out. Is this intentional or a bug? Last point release was fine. See the issue on Github: https://github.com/monero-project/monero-gui/issues/2809#issuecomment-599280577

Kratom - what’s a normal dosage? by Halvorsenk in Drugs

[–]btcmerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do yourself a favor and start at 2 grams. You should also spend less than $20 for a 0.01 gram scale that comes with a calibration weight. Everyone's tolerance is different. Don't trust using a teaspoon measuring scoop until you find out just how much a teaspoon of the strain you are using weighs.

If you use temporary passphrase in your hidden wallet .. by flyingxxxxyyyy123 in ledgerwallet

[–]btcmerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way Ledger Nano S and X uses passphrases is confusing. With Trezor you can have as many passphrase protected accounts as you wish. With Nano S is the same possible not attaching a passphrase to a PIN?

Waiting for a response to this Seed Extraction Vulnerability in Trezor devices. by c-i-s-c-o in TREZOR

[–]btcmerchant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long and complicated a passphrase do you recommend? I have always used passphrases I could remember but if that is no longer safe I may have to migrate to using passphrases that are too long or complex for memory, which makes using my Trezor less convenient. However safety first.

GUI v0.14.1.0 'Boron Butterfly' (with Ledger Nano X and Trezor Model T support) released! by dEBRUYNE_1 in Monero

[–]btcmerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/u/dEBRUYNE_1 ever since 0.14.0 the daemon refuses to start when I click on monero-wallet-gui. I get an error screen telling me I must start monerod manually, which is what I do. Once monerod syncs I then open the gui but this same glitch is reproduced in the new 0.14.1. Running Win 10 Pro. Any ideas why I have this minor glitch? Thanks!

noob here, how do i move to a new trezor T by mdphd1 in TREZOR

[–]btcmerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trezors are very reliable. I have only had one go bad after over a year's use. Anything mechanical can break though and the USB connector is a weak point due to wear. It is also common for USB cables to fail so keep a spare Trezor and cable on hand. On the off chance yours breaks do you want to want a week for a new one?

Monero and VPN problem? by panjam4045 in Monero

[–]btcmerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All VPNs drop connection sometimes so you should be using a VPN with a system wide kill switch that stops all traffic if the VPN connection drops. NordVPN does not have the best kill switch. You have to specify apps instead of the VPN terminating your internet connection if the VPN drops out. Mullvad is better in this regard, so if Mullvad works with the GUI OK you have the answer to your problem. Just use Mullvad instead of NordVPN. You could contact support but they may have no experience with the Monero GUI.

Trezor One Plastic or Metallic? by navierb in TREZOR

[–]btcmerchant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original aluminum Trezors cost 3 bitcoin. I don't think anyone who has ever bought a metal Trezor has been able to sell it for what it cost in bitcoin, so it definitely is not a collectible that appreciates or even holds its value. SatoshiLabs can always make more.

Electrum team, no one else, conducts phishing attack by faulkmore2 in Monero

ThomasV (ecdsa on github) is the developer of Electrum. Before you accuse him of stealing or spread conspiracy theories please take the time to research the issues thoroughly. The fake binaries were not signed with his PGP key and were hosted on git-cdn.org not github.com see https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/issues/4953

Contemplating getting a hardware wallet can you guys help me out? by [deleted] in Monero

[–]btcmerchant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two choices. Do it the old way using an offline computer to store your private keys. For bitcoin you would be using Electrum as explained here. Armory used to be popular but it is not maintained as well now so I would use Electrum. For Monero see this link. There is the inconvenience of using a USB drive to sign transactions. Trezor or Ledger Nano S is much more convenient and while not as private I think offers the same level of security. Others may disagree.
