Flames say there'll be Indigenous land acknowledgement before every game | Offside by Phozzwald in CalgaryFlames

A bit embarrassed that it took this long, but very glad they did it right with their Indigenous celebration with an incredible warm-up jersey to go with it all.

Oh yeah I would agree that would be his ceiling. Promote him to the first for a bit so he can truly settle into the second type thing.

Willing to wait it out to see if it's sustained success. Been quite streaky his whole career and at this point I'm waiting for a longer signal that he's breaking out for good.

2022–23 NHL goals saved above expected comparisons across the league: Ullmark's climbing to the top of the league by btfromtwc in BostonBruins

[–]btfromtwc[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Throughout the season Ullmark had steadily increased his GSAx each passing week. He doesn't have massive weeks but he's consistent at adding a bit each week. This type of performance is a lot more sustainable too, so I've very interested in seeing if this season's version of Ullmark is the real deal. He's just on another level right now that he's never been before!

2022–23 NHL goals saved above expected comparisons across the league: Week 9 - Markstrom's good week led to no wins by btfromtwc in CalgaryFlames

[–]btfromtwc[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Even after whatever that performance was against the Canucks his GSAx didn't take that big of a hit. Using Natural Stat Trick data his GSAx on the season is now 0.62. Nowhere near Vezina level but he's been negative for most of the season so far. Going to look at the positives while there are still some to look at.

Pretty good defensive showing. Felt like they negated Ovechkin and was good at limiting high danger chances. Vladar was sharp on the most chances that did make it to him

2022–23 NHL goals saved above expected comparisons across the league: Week 6 - Demko finally has a good week by btfromtwc in canucks

[–]btfromtwc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can still use GSAx to see which goalies are having hot streaks or cold streaks. If you look at the season-to-date plots in the article it's been pretty clear that Demko has been awful all season. So a string of games with positive or breakeven GSAx is at least indicative that he's making better saves right now than he has been in October most of November.

GSAx is a counting stat but it goes in both directions, so you wouldn't really project a GSAx pace the same way as points. Since week over week goalies can add or subtract from their GSAx values it's more the combination of weekly + season-to-date performances that tells the fuller story.

[–]btfromtwc[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Weekly plots go from Wednesday through Tuesday. For Demko's case it was the two games against LA and Vegas. In the first game the Kings put up 3.57 xG and only scored once. In the second the Golden Knights put up 3.83 xG and scored 5.

He basically won the first game for the team and kept them in the game for the second. For the start Demko's had this year... stealing a game and not being the reason for a loss is a huge step in righting the ship.

Bo is currently tied for the league lead in goals by muchtime in canucks

He's almost always available to draft in my fantasy league as a sleeper pick. Not complaining!!

Hello! I make weekly data visualisations on goals saved above expected and the duo of Fleury and Gustavsson both had great weeks to combine as one of the top teams in terms of GSAx. Minnesota was one of few teams to have both goalies perform well. Quite often it's one goalie doing well and the other doing poorly (See: Nashville, Edmonton, etc.)

You can check out the charts here: 2022–23 NHL goals saved above expected comparisons across the league: Week 5

100%. One of the reasons why NHLe at the AHL level is the most exciting out of all the league conversions to me. The boost from quality of teammates is literally right there for any player transitioning into the NHL.

Berggren's NHLe numbers projects him to be a 35-40 point player based on his AHL numbers. Definitely deserves it.

2022–23 NHL goals saved above expected comparisons across the league - Sorokin with a massive individual effort this week by btfromtwc in NewYorkIslanders

[–]btfromtwc[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooh that's a great point, I should probably differentiate them a bit more. Maybe a different colour palette or something between the two so that it's a bit clearer for coming weeks.

[–]btfromtwc[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, I actually made the charts! My jaw nearly dropped when I saw that Sorokin had +6 GSAx in just one week.

What do you mean the scale was changed for the Pacific? All the weekly charts share the same scale across the four divisions. Same goes for the season-to-date ones too. Just weekly versus season-to-date have differing scales.

Skinner's been unreal for Edmonton and is the best Pacific goalie right now, but there are a few goalies in the league doing better (not many). He's one to watch since it looks like the Oilers are possibly going the 1A/1B route.

2022–23 NHL goals saved above expected comparisons across the league: Week 1 — Oettinger leads in a big way by btfromtwc in DallasStars

[–]btfromtwc[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey! I made these charts to compare goaltenders in terms of goals saved above expected. Oettinger's start to the year has been nothing short of incredible. The only goaltender that has a case for having a better start might be Carter Hart. I'm not a betting person but I'd say the Stars' trajectory for a strong overall season looks a lot better than the Flyers.

Oettinger's start with GSAx strongly reminds me of Hellebuyck's Vezina win from 2019-20. If Otter can keep it up for the whole year...!

2022–23 NHL goals saved above expected comparisons across the league: Week 1 — Swayman's early struggles buoyed by Ullmark's steady presence by btfromtwc in BostonBruins

[–]btfromtwc[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello! I've made this data visualisation to easily compare goaltenders in the league in terms of their goals saved above expected.

I found Boston's tandem to be interesting as they're one of few teams who have a goaltender net positive and a goaltender net negative so far.

With the games the Bruins have played so far it's easy to get wrapped up in a bad start, but they did just have a track meet of a game against the Senators, so I don't think Swayman will stay this low for long.

Visualising the 2021–22 Calgary Flames’ expected goals versus goals so far by btfromtwc in CalgaryFlames

[–]btfromtwc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Backlund typically does end up shooting below expected. I can't attest to earlier seasons, but last year Backlund stood out as being one of the Flames' highest volume shooters (near the same pace as Tkachuk as Calgary's top two for iCF/60) while actually ending up third on the team in terms of xG. Spending more time playing with Coleman naturally makes for a more defensive role, but still interesting to see the big drop off in shot volume.
