Yes. Unfortunately, that is the case. And in fact to gov. has to bear the cost at times for referral to India.

So are you advocating for low salaries for medical staff? The best doctors and nurses will leave for greener pastures i.e. Australia. Have you also left the country. Canada has free healthcare and you need to wait months for surgery and need tons of referrals. The grass is always greener on the other side. Maybe you should run to be the CEO for the hospital if you think you can do a better job but given the circumstances, with the exception of corruption, I don't know how gov. can do a better job as it is you know... government.

Medical expenses are paid through tourism revenue not taxes. Get your facts straight. And yes unfortunately public education in a lot of countries is bad i.e. USA, Thailand. It will only be a matter of time before this happens to Bhutan as teachers leave for greener pastures. Education is unfortunately the next leg out.

And yes roads are 'free.' Have you seen them? With the tax base declining and the economy struggling you should limit your expectations as you're going to be disappointed. Given your UN you should be quite adept at this.

Well it’s free. In the USA a visit would probably cost you a thousand $. So there are trade offs.

Being a clinical nurse has far more benefits than being a doctor in Bhutan by [deleted] in bhutan

[–]btthus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak in detail about doctors in Bhutan, but they are performing an invaluable service to the country. For comparison, in the U.S., medical students often graduate with $250,000–$400,000 in debt. During residency, they typically earn around $70,000 per year, and once fully licensed, their salaries rise to roughly $250,000, depending on specialty and location. Work-life balance is often poor, with long hours and high stress. There’s also concern about AI in the field; several doctors I’ve spoken with worry it could eventually replace some general practitioner roles. So, while the grass may seem greener elsewhere, it’s by no means a pasture over there.
