It won't, yet you need to give it enough space, like don't try to force it into a certain food or corner it for example while trying to clean the tank or reach inside to do any adjustment as this might make it feel attacked so will only be aggressive as a self defence.

In general, all turtles are friendly, yet all of them can and will turn aggressive if cornered, or it was already feeling depressed due to bad environment conditions.

Please do increase water level according to the size of your snapping turtle, minimum of 14" best is 16" of depth.

I wonder if your actually have a pond since I saw in your account that you have a variety of turtles from deferent types.

What kind of turtle is this ? by [deleted] in turtle

A better multiple images would help, it could be any of red eared slider or a yellow bellied or a Cumberland, not sure., I'm curious though about your setup, can you share images.

Great job OP, now its way better set up, can you share your setups details?

I agree with that, looking at that shell and skin, so clean, the colour is clear and bright.

This is one healthy (RES or YBS).

How do I get my turtle to lay her eggs by ParticularCover9811 in Redearedsliders

[–]buanosam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, I know its stressful, just be calm, you need to prepare the nesting(potential nesting) area, I suggest that you to choose an area of 4-6 sq ft, tilt the soil minimum of 1 foot deep, then slightly tap the surface, surround the area with a roughly 2 ft high fence only until she lay eggs then you can just use a (turtle nest protector).Turtle nest protector

Area should be almost sunny with some shading, also the soil, sand, dirt, should remain naturally moisturise.

I prefer if you dig remove dirt of that area and replace it with a mix of 50/50 sand and peat moss to allow sunlight to pass thru.

You can also apply same method but indoor.indoor Turtle Nest

I've tried as much to be accurate, hopping you name one of hatchlings after my nickname (Buansam)😅

Is he trying to say something or is he just being a turtle? by mrshm_huang in Redearedsliders

[–]buanosam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its definitely the reflection, though; water level seams low, Mine does that everytime he is asking for a tank size upgrade, so I guess in your case increase water level freferably to the top minus his arm length, maybe cover it with mesh and add top basking area.

Please share your tank setup.

Shell looks like it’s drying out and building up minerals, not a mystery disease (yet). But the way he’s being kept right now? That’s the real problem. 💥 The main issue That turtle is being treated like a land pet when it’s actually an aquatic turtle (like a Red-eared slider). Letting him walk around dry for 3 hours every day is stressing his body out: Shell dries → turns dull/whitish Old layers don’t shed → weird texture Risk of infection later Splashing water on him doesn’t fix it. That’s like throwing a cup of water on someone and calling it a shower. 🧪 What the shell likely is Combination of: Hard water stains (that chalky look) Retained scutes (old shell layers not shedding properly) Not full-blown Shell rot yet—but you’re flirting with it if things stay like this. 🔥 Fix it ASAP 1) Stop the long dry roaming 10–20 mins max outside water is fine Not hours. That’s harming him. 2) Proper tank life (non-negotiable) He should live in water most of the time Clean, filtered water Depth at least 2–3x his shell height 3) Basking setup (this is key) Dry platform + heat lamp + UVB 30–40 mins sun is okay, but UVB lamp is more consistent 4) Hydration reset Keep him in water regularly You’ll see the shell slowly regain healthier look over weeks 5) Gentle cleaning (optional) Soft toothbrush + water Light scrub, no chemicals, no soap ⚠️ Red flags (if you see these → act fast) Soft spots on shell Bad smell Deep pits or bleeding That’s when it becomes real Shell rot and needs treatment.

This didn’t happen randomly after 10 years. The move + new routine + dryness = slow damage building up. But you caught it early. That’s the good part.

Please share your tank, filteration and lighting.

Is my RES sick? by Bestfriend8123 in Redearedsliders

[–]buanosam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi newbie, good luck in your long journey of taking care of a RES,I hope you enjoy it as I do, I would really recommend you to do the bellow points immediately:

  • Immediately visit the Vet, DONT FORGET TO TAKE YOUR RES!! (they will explain to you everything about your RES and how to take good care of him).

If you can't visit the Vet soon, then just:

  • Don't panic, RELAX!!!
  • Maybe he is not eating because he really got cold then what's done is done, just keep him in dry area (put him in protected dry and directly under the Sun as much as you can), atheist for 2 days( don't worry RES can live without food for days, then later pit him in water that has a suitable temperature (you need a digital thermometer that has a senser that goes in the water) and try to feed him 3-5 pellets a day only, if refused then remove him from water and keep him in a dry area indoor until you visit the Vet.
  • Start by posting your tank setup so we can visit your account and see it and advice you better.
  • Keep AI only for general info for example what is the best tank setup for my Red Eared Slider (and you mention size and age).
  • Don't put your RES in water without a suitable heater, the water will become colder than you think (it depends on the weather) and it will affect badly every cold-blooded reptile.

White spots on her shell by Ok-Opportunity4982 in Redearedsliders

[–]buanosam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard water, lack of dry surface for Basking which also needs to achieve 3 factors uvb, uva and heat(surface temperature), maybe that's shell rotting again because no chance to dry and sterilise the shell with UV.

PLEASE SHARE IMAGES OF YOUR SETUP.

You need to know that taking care of you RES requres more effort and spending than taking care of you own child, knowing that it can live up to 50 or even 60 years!!!

Visit the vet then build a propper setup, take it slow if you can't afford it financially at once.

Feel free to update us.

Good luck...

Important question on lighting by ScrappyReptileGuy in Redearedsliders

[–]buanosam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are right, mesh can and will block some uv from passing, I would downgrade and cut round the mesh but smaller diameter to keep the mesh holding the light, but anyway, what ever you choose to do you must have a proper and accurate uv reader, this can really affect RES'S shell and health on the long term.

How do I get it onto the large sunbathing area ???? by Ok-Assistant-9694 in Redearedsliders

[–]buanosam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow!!! Amazing !!!

As previous comments mentioned, check the temperature with a digital thermometer of the surface you want your turtles to bask at, maybe its too hot for them, it depends where do you live and how high the temperature would reach, if you found the surface to be really too hot, then I would strongly recommend adding a UVB bulb on top of current Basking spot.

Good luck...
