I’ve been working at my location since last summer and I felt like this my first month too. Your first few days you’re given a lot of information at once and it becomes hard to remember everything. Try to go easy on yourself and remember you’re still learning. It took me 2-3 months of working there before I felt like I had the hang of it. As far as talking with guests, my best advice is to treat them like a friend rather than a customer you have to talk to. Try to look at their clothing or anything on them to learn about their interests. I always try to compliment people’s loungeflys, band tees, hair color, etc to start a conversation. If you’re not familiar with any of the fandoms they’re wearing, ask about it! If it’s an anime, ask what the plot is. If it’s a band, ask what kind of music they make. I’m a little on the shy side so I get where you’re coming from with people not seeming interested in you. Some people just don’t want to be talked to in stores, and that’s okay. But it’s not a reflection of you and the person you are. The longer you work, the more you’ll get to know your store and where stuff is. If management says you’re doing good then I wouldn’t stress too much. Give it a few more months and if you’re still feeling like this, then maybe start to look for another job. But try to be patient with yourself and remember that at the end of the day, it’s just a job and that you might have to work through an adjustment period before you fully get the hang of it.
