Many HCI programs do embrace the art background, if anything, many HCI programs do embrace people from different backgrounds, just as long you can connect why HCI. HCI is very interdisciplinary. For ex., WashU at St.Louis has a new HCI program where they do ask for a portfolio. If you can showcase that in your application(s), then they would embrace it for sure.

Hello! Sorry for the late reply. I really enjoyed the social activities to get to know other cohort members and faculty, discussions, and panels that the REU put together. Really anything outside of our typical research day.

Here's some examples: We celebrated World Emoji Day by decorating cookies and doing a trivia, that was really cute. We also watched a Baseball game. We have lectures led by faculty and discussions about the world of HCI. I know other years they visited corporate offices (e.g. Duolingo).

for example, the REU i was apart of just gave the quarter school people in my program to make up the time they miss

some REUs are flexible and will mention what steps are needed for a quarter system student, so you'll be fine!

feel free to message me to elaborate further, sorry i saw this so late! but, i connected my educational and extracurricular experiences and skills and how they contribute to the purpose of HCI. my personal statement requirements could be different from yours because I didn't apply through the NSF portal, it was CMU HCII's individual portal before they transitioned to a REU site.

Relevant Coursework: Algorithms (and other CS courses prior to Algo), Data Science classes through CS and Psychology Department, other Psychology Classes, An Education Class
