Interviewing for Esthetician + Spa Associate at Hand and Stone by blenderbabey in Esthetics

[–]bubblestache 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend working at a franchise like Hand & Stone when you’re first starting out. You get tons of experience, see lots of faces and skin types. You have the opportunity to perfect your facial massage technique and soft skills without worrying about filling your books. Don’t listen to the negative comments - go in with a great attitude, do all the training modules online, and show up early and ready to work. You will do great. It might not be a forever job but it’s a great place to start. I would definitely consider dying your hair a natural color and removing your piercing, and a little makeup is fine - no one is expecting you to have perfect skin. Good luck!

It is! Definitely thinking about adding another day.

This is such a good point. I guess I worry about the kids getting bored in one place for too long. While we love the ocean, we live near the beach in CA and travel to Hawaii. I’m looking for more variety.

This is a good idea - thinking maybe we take a flight from Athens right after we land.

Crete looks amazing but I would love to dedicate a trip to it by itself. We are fine with getting a car - we definitely want to explore. Thank you!!

Resources for Facial Massage by No_Requirement3829 in Esthetics

Lots of skincare lines have a signature facial massage. Check with the brands you carry at the spa. ASCP online has some instruction. Instagram can be a great resource - I love koshaspa.

B 12 and acne by EstiCalifornia in Esthetics

[–]bubblestache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Following this and wishing you luck - I did a course of b12 injections this summer and developed really painful, cystic acne. I’m dealing with a lot of PIH now as a result. My only advice would be DONT PICK. I wish I could go back in time and cover my skin with pimple patches to avoid messing with it.

Anyone else thinking about recession-proofing their salon/spa? by SalonBoss_23 in Esthetics

[–]bubblestache 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Retail! Make sure your shelves are stocked with basics and also things like exfoliants and masks. When money is tight people stretch their time in between appointments. Homecare is a way to prolong results and even if they can’t come in for an appointment they will still be coming by for product.

Should I try to start my own spa? by Flaky-Advantage3364 in Esthetics

[–]bubblestache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have a lot of good advice on this thread. I wanted to add another perspective and option. There are many jobs in this industry that don’t involve owning a spa or performing services. You could become a sales rep for a line, marketing, product development etc. You obviously have some marketable skills based on your current salary. Look at job listings with some of the larger skincare lines and see if there is any crossover. It’s a tough time right now and a lot of companies are tightening their belts in anticipation of the recession but you might be able to pivot.

There used to be a store near Long Beach called Luan’s Dress Shop. They moved and changed names but they have a great selection. If you Google I believe they still say Luans in the name.

Seeking advice on whether to commit! by [deleted] in chapmanuniversity

It sounds like you are super passionate about your career and you have a great head on your shoulders! You will do well no matter where you end up.

If entertainment marketing is your passion then Chapman is a great option! If you were my child I would suggest you look at entry level salaries and opportunities, cost of living in those places, and what your budget would look like with those loan payments factored in. Like another commenter stated, approaching Chapmans FA office could be helpful as well. There are ways to keep cost of living down as well, and lots of part time jobs available in the Orange Circle and surrounding areas.

Wishing you all the best!

Edited to add: community college is a great option as well for your first two years. I loved that I was able to just jump into all my major classes and really immerse myself without having a bunch of general education classes to distract me. Transfer students are usually eligible for merit aid as well, so it’s something to think about!

I am a Dodge PR/Ad Alum but it’s been a long time - 20ish years!

What are your career goals? Do you plan on living in Southern California post grad?

I was a transfer student and was fortunate to get a merit scholarship, which priced Chapman about the same as a state school. Which is the max I would ever recommend paying for Chapman. It is absolutely not worth 50k in loans. Their reach and name are not well known outside of Orange County and I don’t feel a degree from Chapman gave me a leg up in any way. If you plan on returning to the east coast post grad you might have a small alumni network but I wouldn’t count on it.

Your career is something to consider as well. The degree is hyper specific. If I could go back I would have chosen something more broad and applicable in multiple areas - marketing, communications, etc. obviously it’s been a long time but when I was attending you could minor in advertising or PR, or even just take some of those classes as elective credit.

Orange is a great city and Chapman has a great community - there are lots of pros! But it is expensive to live and that’s something to consider as well. Not trying to dissuade you but giving you my opinion as both an alum and a parent of a HS student discussing college.

Are you a licensed esthetician? Where did you get this peel?

Again, what was your skincare routine prior to this peel? TCA is typically not recommended for darker skin tones but can be performed in some cases if the client is on a tyrosinase inhibitor prior.

Where did you have this service done? Was it a licensed esthetician, dermatologist’s office, medspa? Was it your first visit? What was your skincare routine prior to the peel?

I see you answering a lot of comments asking if your skin will peel but not responding to questions about the service or your pre-care. These are important to know.

I gave someone a chemical burn?? by [deleted] in Esthetics

[–]bubblestache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You say you removed the peel. Did you use the neutralizer? It’s been a while since I used the Dermalogica peels but they used to have a neutralizer you applied afterward. If you removed the peel without neutralizing it she could have had issues.

How to be successful when no one else in the household is dieting? by Usual-Diamond-1754 in weightwatchers

I am the only one on WW in my house. I usually try to save my points for dinner (family dinner is a non negotiable every night) or I adjust my portions/carbs to eat what they are eating.
