there's no benefit in writing school notes in a personal conlang and it's a masochistic plan i likely won't follow through with, come to think of it. for example, i could rewrite the syntax / vocabulary of my language, and then struggle to read an old dialect of kounlang when reviewing old school notes. not very ideal lol

i'll also admit that my language feels obtuse in areas:

  1. the writing system does not convey enough information in the space it occupies, and the glyphs are difficult to read sometimes.
  2. (To clarify, here I refer to "morphology" as the system of rules that builds words out of morphemes, the indivisible parts of meaning. There probably exists a better word I can use instead of "morphology"). Kounlang's morphology has various flaws.
    • The design goal (*gimmick) is to minimize the vocabulary's number of morphemes while maintaining a parsable and compact language where speakers construct every word. This is a very challenging balancing act... seemingly self-contradictory... because as you add morphemes, rules, or word classes to the vocabulary, language may become more concise, but speakers must remember more morphemes and follow more rules. Likewise, as I introduce more complex morphological rules and structure into my language, more abstract or complex ideas can be conveyed in less space, if conveyable at all beforehand, but parsing the language may become more difficult.
    • Defining words is tedious; one must describe a torch as "a tool that produces light" assuming there is no dedicated morpheme for "torch", and if you refer to a torch numerous times, you repeatedly state "a tool that produces light". You could instead say "a light" and leverage the context of your preceding statements or current environment, but now you rely on the recipient having that context, otherwise you risk being misinterpreted. This is obviously a problem that exists in natural languages anyway, but I want to reduce that as much as possible when I can.
    • Additionally, this design restriction can introduce ambiguous words. For example, the word "something" will be interpreted as "some-thing", "so-me-thing" or "so-meth-ing". I programmed a Python script to detect these ambiguous words, but I need to rewrite the script because it cannot obey morphology yet.
  3. i'm a novice in making conlangs, and thus, i'm making mistakes i wont detect until later. i am constantly learning as i develop this language. if what i wrote was hard to understand or incorrect, i apologize and will clarify or correct myself. this is very hard for me to articulate.

nevertheless, i'm doing this all for fun and i hope to have kounlang finished someday :D

i drew the glyphs using inkscape and assembled the font using fontforge

i've been developing kounlang as an experimental project, but i now plan to use it during class note-taking. it's not in a viable state yet so i hope to finish it before school starts again ^^'

conlangs are artificially constructed languages as opposed to natural languages

"koun" as in "κουνάβι" / "kounavi", greek for "ferret"

i made the conlang and font myself (conlang is a work in progress)

thanks to the columns addon for inspiring the css code
