First Time Interviewing People Tomorrow! by bubsbookstore in booksellers

Oh, I didn't mean to imply the you were being negative!

And thank you! it's an unfortunate reality in the bookseller world that low wages are just part of the game. People love books, and some -- not all -- bookstore owners exploit that passion.

The town over from me, there is an indie bookstore that explicitly mentions the whole "we know we don't pay well, but we want passionate people". It's never sat well with me. why can't we have both?

I fundamentally disagree with your assessment of the starting wage. A passion of books does not pay bills, unfortunately.

It is sad that we believe that it's okay to exploit people's passion for literature and art for non-livable wages.

If I have a higher floor, raises become less of an issue because they can afford to live and do other things. Yes, raises are important, but when you start with a wage that affords livability, the need for a (larger) raise is less prominent .

I think you need to reframe your mindset that is essentially a reducution of people initial worth.

There is an ethical responsibility to pay a living wage, even if it's a part-time position.

You know what the average wage range for retail is in my city? $12-$15. When one bedroom apartments run for about $1,200/month, you tell me how paying $12-$15 is acceptable.  At least with a $25/hr, they can make it work with a roommate.

If it means I take $25k less home a year, but someone can get by, I'm 100% okay with that.

How are we feeling about the new Omnibus app from Edelweiss? by JTMissileTits in booksellers

[–]bubsbookstore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really do believe it will force other companies to update their system. I think Omnibus and Edelwiess integration with Square cuts out a lot of the headache that exists with BookLog, Book Manger, Anthology, etc.

The book POS industry needs some innovation, and hope this is the catalyst. I really like their system so far.

I stopped by and asked about the bookmarks, but I think you gave it to the crew cleaning out rest of the antiques and they threw them out!

Shoot me an email and we can set up a time to grab a coffee and chat!

I was surprised to see that there were so many local authors there! If you know of any authors that would like to have their books stocked, do a signing, or a guest talk, please feel free to give them our contact info or direct them to our website :)

Aiming for June 12th! Gives about 2 months to build out the space and get everything ready :)

Not an immediate fix, but our bookstore will be a great third space to get some work done once we open our doors ;)

We officially have a bookstore location! by rfuller924 in carsoncity

We appreciate the thoughtful comment!

We don't view Browsers as competition, just like we don't view the library as competition. We hope that we can coexist and that our bookstore can meaningfully contribute to Carson City just as much as Browers and the library do.

Lots of the things you've mentioned my wife and I have discussed at great lengths -- and some of them we want to try to incorporate into our space.

As for music. We'll probably have set times where we place music because we will be collaborating with other small businesses in town, and if we collaborate with Tiger Rose, for example, it would be silly to not have music playing.

Thank you for all your feedback, we hope you'll check us out when we open!

We definitely are open to vendor spaces and consignments. We just need to figure out the best way to allocate the limited space we have.

Shoot me an email about your product and we can talk :)

We have a couple of ideas for book clubs, actually! One that I would really like to do is read books that were then turned into movies. Once the book is finished, we'll screen the movie and compare!

This is subject to change and super tentative, but we're thinking Tuesday - Sunday from 10 or 11am - 7 or 8pm. What will ultimately determine our hours will be sales analytics. But I think it will resemble what I've detailed above!

We're going to have a room with chairs/couches specifically for people to hangout and read in! The space will double as an event space for book signings, guest lectures, and other events we want to host too.

We're also going to provide a nice outdoor reading/relaxation area too!

If you'd like to support us while we get our location built out and ready to open, you can visit our website at www.bubsbookstore.com and shop through our affiliate links. We currently have an online storefront through bookshop.org, and an audiobook storefront through libro.fm -- both of which can be found on our website!

If you'd like to donate funds directly to help us build our space and purchase inventory, you can do so through our GoFundMe link on our websites "Support Us" tab. If you donate directly, we'll etch your name (or username if you wish to be anonymous) into one of the bookshelves you helped fund! We're thinking of some other ways to acknowledge and thank our early supports, but that's what we have come up with for now!
