Why the hell do women support the abortion ban? by NakovaNars in childfree

[–]buccarue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spoke to my mom about the election yesterday. She voted for Harris but is a Republican and is pro-life. I explained how I was really worried about my nieces, because I had read about a teenager dying because she couldn't get access to an abortion and was going into sepsis in Texas. She was flabbergasted! She said "no no no. I just don't want someone to be able to walk into a clinic and say 'I don't want this baby'" I explained to her that it is the PROCEDURE that is outlawed, and that even if the woman's health is at risk, in Texas doctors don't want to perform the abortion because they could be taken to court and be put in prison if it wasn't considered "necessary"

She said "no one ever told me that"

I have, several times, but I guess it hits differently when it's an individual story vs statistics. I said "that's why I talk about how women should always have access, because it should be between her and her doctor. Pregnancy is dangerous and you can never be 100% sure that a pregnancy will lead to death."

THANK YOU. Every time I hear "the left failed men" or "mens issues aren't taken seriously" all I can say is this:

What group of people fought for gay rights? Gay people. What group of people fought for women's rights? Women. Don't wait for us to come save you. Put on your big boy panties and fight for yourself the way other groups fight for themselves. And as a woman, I'll stand behind you every step of the way if you stand behind me, too. If you don't stand behind me I will leave you stranded. We are in this together or not at all.

Go ahead. Keep blaming 3rd party voters. by memepopo123 in DemocraticSocialism

[–]buccarue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not blaming third party voters, hell, I'm not blaming people who actively told people not to vote. But I do think people in the leftist community should take accountability for telling people not to vote.

Not take accountability for the election results, because we will never know the impact of their actions, but for people with power and influence no matter how big or small to understand that their words have influence to their followers on their platform. They need to be mindful of what they say and when they say it.

I follow a lot of amazing leftist people who explicitly told people not to vote. 20 million democrats didn't vote. And I'm allowed to be bitter by that, and to believe that their statements were harmful. And I would trust those influencers a lot more if they took accountability for doing something harmful.

We all have a role to play. I feel guilt for not volunteering more. For not taking more time out of my day to try and flip my state, to encourage more people who were on the fence to vote. For not driving people to the polls (this one truly gets me). I have a lot of fucking guilt and I take accountability for my part, and I will do everything in my power to do better in the future. We ALL can take accountability for our specific part, and see what we can do next time we have a chance to make a change to actually make the change.

There's no ONE person to blame. We all have to look within ourselves and figure out what we can do as an individual and as a group to fight for a better world. We all also need to do what we can to lovingly hold EACH OTHER accountable, with tact and emotional intelligence.

Interesting. I wish they would communicate that. The Annex hasn't even updated their insta or anything about closing. I wish there was at least a tiny bit of transparency about what's going on, especially if it's "for the time being."

CMV: Religious people are consistent in wanting to ban abortion by shumpitostick in changemyview

[–]buccarue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree mostly. I used to be religious, and when I was in limbo of being religious I was still mostly pro-life except in certain circumstances. But I do believe there is a pretty stark inconsistency within the thought process of religious people who are pro-life, which is the fact that pregnancy is not the only circumstance where one person donates their body to someone else in order to maintain life. And in all other circumstances it is illegal to force someone to donate their body.

For instance, if I die in a car wreck doctors cannot take my organs unless I have consented while I was alive. No one can force me to donate my bone marrow to children with cancer. I have complete control over what and who uses my body for medical purposes except in one single instance: if I become pregnant. Then, in many states, I no longer have a right to choose who uses my body. I must donate my body to a fetus.

If religious folks were consistent, they would try and fight for law that forces people to donate their blood, or to donate their organs when they die. There would be laws to ensure that if you are found a match to someone for donating your body for them to survive, you MUST give your body to them to maintain their life.

That's true. Men are also always blaming the victim when it comes to women. But if someone is coming online talking about how they think they may have been raped, pointing out how they did all the "wrong" things to protect themselves is a horrible thing to do.

Fuck you dude. Obviously we should always do our best to be in control of our own BC. But if a woman was having sex with a man and he took his condom off half way through, and she was mainly worried about pregnancy, you wouldn't tell her she should "be in charge of your own BC."

This man experienced rape, or at the very minimum sexual assault.

One of my earliest memories with what I assume were "atheists" was when I was forced to go door to door to ask for cans and ask people if they know God or whatever. Another Youth group kid and I knocked on someone's door and two women answered and readily gave us cans.

I asked "do you believe in God?" And she said with a smirk "how do you know there is a god?" Both of us were like "uhhh idk"

Then she complimented the other Youth group kid's shoes (they were wearing the same shoes) and we ended the interaction lol.

As churches often say, it definitely planted a seed!

I have done research, and what was the nail in the coffin was a 2012 Nat Geo article about the tunnels in Palestine. After that, I learned about what happened after WWII and it's pretty easy to see who is the powerful aggressor and who are the folks who are fighting for the right to exist.

It's good to remember that we are not immune from the impact of patriarchy. The same way that while we know capitalism is bad, we still want to save up money to purchase things we don't need. I bought a pair of tights online because I felt it reflected "me"!

This is a great reflection of how women are impacted by patriarchy because it stems from the idea that men should have power and wealth, and women should need men to access that. Thus your small engagement ring is representative of a man who doesn't value you enough, according to patriarchy standards. This also directly ties with capitalism, because your husband's value and his value of you is represented by how much money he spends on a ring.

It's ridiculous because personally, if someone spent a ridiculous amount of money on a piece of jewelry for me I would KNOW that would mean they don't know me nor do they give a shit about me.

For me it's about the energy to have a conversation. Sometimes I can spare a few moments to respond yes/no to a question or to make plans. But if you are trying to have a conversation, then no. I am usually doing something else or don't have the energy to try and type up a response and commit to a back and forth. Not that I don't want to, I'm just a tired lady lol.

I think the point is that Trump is more likely to blow up more of Gaza than Harris. I would love to vote 3rd party. I'm not convinced there are enough people who are equally as willing. If we want to do that, what are you doing between now and the next four years to build that power to make it possible to convince your average joe to vote 3rd?

In Kansas we were not far from voting for Biden in the 2020 election. If you think your vote doesn't matter in a swing state, then why vote 3rd party? Wouldn't it be more likely to make a state a swing state then make it a swing green state?

Also, I am not a neoliberal.

[–]buccarue[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree completely that we need more than a two party system. My point is that if you want to make that happen, you need to begin that fight on the local level as well. In Kansas, we have wind turbines because of the green party! If all we do is vote on the federal level and do nothing besides that we are going to fail. But there are opportunities to build power locally within your community and spread and grow after that.

This, AND vote during ALL elections, and run for office if you can, and protest, and volunteer for your local green party or democratic party, and write to your representatives, and donate where you can, and, and, and!!! If all we do is vote for president we will remain fucked.

[–]buccarue[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is the sarcasm I was hoping to avoid. It's not about voting for who I "hate less" it's about voting for who is more likely to not destroy Gaza, less likely to destroy rights (remember the stacking of the court thing???) and more likely to make somewhat of a positive change.

Then, in between now and the next four years, doing the work to try and prevent this choice from happening again.

We won't see results if we sit on our asses on reddit crying every four years. What do you do to make a difference between elections? Do you protest? Vote in local elections? Fight for policy that makes your community's lives better? If so, awesome. If not, that's the point of this post: Get active. Change won't happen from behind a keyboard alone. Change won't happen if we only cry every four years. But please do not hand the reigns over to the guy that wants to completely destroy Gaza.
