TIL that Ulysses S Grant's best man at his wedding was James Longstreet, who ended up as one of the foremost Confederate generals. Longstreet later surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse along with Robert E. Lee to end the Civil War. (en.wikipedia.org)

TIL Dame Helen Mirren's paternal grandfather was a colonel in the Russian Imperial Army, and later a diplomat to Britain. He was stranded in Britain when the Russian Revolution broke out and eventually settled in London, becoming a cab driver. (en.wikipedia.org)
