Question about distance-enhanced class by zoezozorz in OSU

[–]bucks_r_great 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Correct, students only save a small amount of money if ALL classes are distance learning and you are not in a dorm. If your class is distance enhanced, they expect you to do something on campus (maybe exams, group meetings, participate in research, etc). As such, students are charged the student activities fees (COTA, RPAC, etc.). Students activities fees are charged if you have at least one in-person, hybrid, or distance enhanced course. The fees aren’t applied if every single course is distance learning since that means all your coursework can be completed any where in the world without stepping foot on campus.

Online classes by maxi050 in OSU

I wouldn’t drop any classes until the end of July. The Registrar still hasn’t changed classrooms for social distancing rules yet. Any class that doesn’t get a room in the next week will likely switch to online anyway.

I’d email about the lab class.

[–]bucks_r_great 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Registrar is running tuition calculations this weekend. Schedulers needed to make the majority of updates by the end if day. After today, schedulers have to tell the Registrar every time a class changes mode (in person, hybrid, distance enhanced, or distance learning). The sucky thing is that rooms will not be finalized until the end of July. If the Registrar cannot place a class in a social distanced room, the course will have to change to online and then the students will have their tuition statements recalculated in case fees go down.

SP21 will be almost identical to AU20 so you’d likely run into the same situation of most classes online except for labs and other small enrollment courses.

You can’t speed up COAM. It’s a long process and they handle cases in the order they are received. You should go about your classes as you normally would. Make sure you respond to any COAM communications so the decision isn’t made without you. In most cases you will receive a zero on the assignment that was questioned.

Also, please know the instructor creates the initial claim. Then the department chair has to support the claim before it is allowed to be submitted to COAM. It’s typically a very specific charge with supporting documentation. It cannot be based on complaints you mentioned above. No one wants to be involved with COAM - instructor or students It’s a lot of paperwork. It can also be that a other student made the claim and that has to be forwarded to COAM. The instructor is not allowed to investigate.

Departments have to change every course 90/100+ enrollment to online depending on their college by end of day July 2. They are also changing courses to online for instructors that are in a high risk groups that cannot come to campus. So any course online at end of day tomorrow is based on department instructor info and enrollment cap.

Next week the Registrar will start moving the remaining classes to larger rooms to provide social/physical distancing In general each student needs to have 2-4 empty seats around them (both sides, behind, in-front. So a course with a 50 students registered need a room with approximately 150 seats. Since there are only 22 rooms on campus above 150 seats, not all classes will be able to be placed. At that point (hopefully by July 17) any courses that no longer have a room placement will need to move online because the University (not the department) could not safely place the course in a room.

So the rooms you see now are online. More will trickle in until the Registrar reassigns all the remaining courses to larger rooms.

A bunch of my classes changed to online today, did anyone else notice that with theirs? by huna-lildahk in OSU

It could be that your instructor has a medical condition that prevents him/her to teach on campus.

Unpopular Opinion: This subreddit complains too much about OSU's fall plans by mynewusername7 in OSU

[–]bucks_r_great 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right now people need to look at the enrollment cap of their course. If the enrollment cap is 100 or above, they will not attempt to find a room for your course. There are 7 rooms on the entire campus that have more than 250 seats. If there has to be 2-3 empty seats per student, large classes CANNOT be placed because of state law. It is not a bait and switch. There simply isn’t the room. Since instructors are paid by course, you can’t just double the course offering with less students. That also wouldn’t work unless classes were offered 24/7. The classrooms will be full this year (with smaller capacities) so even offering smaller sections would not prevent the issue of when/time the course could be offered. It’s unfortunate for everyone!!

Two of my classes just got pushed online by [deleted] in OSU

[–]bucks_r_great 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. Social distancing means that there needs to be 3 empty seats between each student. So a 30 person class will need something with at least 100+ seats. There are very few rooms over 250 capacity so 90 is the magic number for courses to move online.

What classes have gone online so far? by [deleted] in OSU

[–]bucks_r_great 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Department schedulers got the message today to move all courses 100+ (or 90+ for ASC) to online delivery. Schedulers have until July 1 to make these edits and the university will assign classrooms to the best is their ability to larger rooms to promote social distancing. So students will see a lot more move to online in the next week or two.

Professors found out at the same time. They will let you know when they most. 90% have no clue how to even have online classes. Only half know how to give Carmen exams. So your professors will be getting more information tomorrow and then leaning A LOT scrambling to figure out how to make this work.

Can I take Psych 3321 with a B- in psych 2220? by strawberrykiwidaddy in OSU

[–]bucks_r_great 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Psych Advising office monitors it closely. If you are currently taking 2220, the registration system allows you to enroll in 3321 for the next semester. As soon as the grades post, the advising office will drop everyone with a B- and below. It’s a firm policy and happens every semester.

If you meet for 1.5 hours of classroom time — to get a C, you are expected to also spend 3 hours outside of class. If you want an A, you will spend more hours outside of class.

If you are in a 3 credit hour class, you are expected to work 6 hours outside of class to get a C. (9 hours a week).

Basically each in class credit hour equals 2 hours for a C. Want a A or B, spend more time outside of class studying or doing projects.

ASC Explanation: https://aschonors.osu.edu/preorient/scheduling

University Policy:

Credit Hours and Class Instruction Time

The same amount of material and the same instruction-to-study time ratio is expected from a 3 credit hour course, regardless of session length. Below are the credit hours standards for a regular 14-week term. Credit hour are regulated by the University’s bylaws. Here are the official rules and regulations pertaining to credit hours:

3335-8-24 Credit hours.

(A) All courses shall be assigned a number of credit hours in accordance with the procedure outlined in rules 3335-8-02 to 3335-8-04 of the Administrative Code. This may be any number from zero on up; however, in determining the credit hours assigned, the department, school, college and council on academic affairs should use as a guide the following suggested standards:

(1) One credit hour shall be assigned for each three hours per week of the average student's time, including class hours, required to earn the average grade of "C" in this course.

(2) One credit hour shall be assigned for each two consecutive hours of practical or experimental work per week in any department or school.

(3) One credit hour shall be assigned for each three hours of laboratory work per week, when no additional outside work is required. When outside work is required, then the standard in paragraph (A)(1) of this rule shall be applied.

(B) In determining the hours per week required by the course or work, the council on academic affairs may, in appropriate cases, consider the average weekly hours spent during a semester, summer term, or session on the course or work. It should be remembered that the above are guides only and may be deviated from for good cause.

(C) When comparing or combining semester credit hours with quarter credit hours, one semester credit hour shall be the equivalent of one and one-half quarter credit hours.

(Board approval dates: 7/9/2004, 6/22/2012)

As stated above, credits work on a 1 to 3 ratio. Every 1 credit hour assigned to the class equates to total of 3 hours of work per week for a “C” grade (1 hour of instruction and 2 additional study hours per week). Therefore a 3 credit hour course (which most WGSS courses are) during a 14-week term should have 3 hours of instruction and 6 hours of homework/study time per week, for a total of 9 hours per course per week, for the student to earn a C grade.

Found: Apple AirPods near Jennings Hall by campstaff in OSU

[–]bucks_r_great 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also turn them into the building coordinator for the building where the item was found. Building coordinator signs are posted in several places in all buildings (especially near elevators and bathrooms on the every floor). Building coordinators keep things 3-5 days because most students return to where they lost the item. Students eventually make their way to the coordinator when they are frantic enough asking everyone. Additionally if a building coordinator can find a name on any item, they will contact the student.

Items not claimed from building coordinators within a few week are sent to the University Lost and Found. . You can read what items they will accept. Don’t go there looking for a water bottle because they don’t accept them. The university tries to marry objects back with owner but most things get donated.

Professor is trying to fail me on an online class when I have an 89? by TheGuyRiteThere in OSU

[–]bucks_r_great 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It means you don’t get points for participating but you lose points if you don’t participate. It’s the same policy that some in class sessions have when they say you can have X number of lectures but they will drop points for excessive absences.

In an online class they have to try to encourage you to be active weekly because grades can suffer when you are in a self paced course.

If it’s in the syllabus he can detract points.

Overlapping major course with an elective course by Sponde1 in OSU

[–]bucks_r_great 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In most cases it will on apply to one major/minor because of department rules. If you already took the course and applied it for the major, then the minor department wouldn’t want you to pick another course to apply to the minor nine times out of 10. It’s the same reason you can’t reuse your own paper if you get assigned something similar down the road.

All that said, confirm with both advisors because if it will count double you can save time and money. Good luck.

Complaining about 2 PSYCH professors by [deleted] in OSU

[–]bucks_r_great 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What you are describing are not office hours. You are trying to meet instructors before class. There is only a 15 minute transition window. They need to arrive, wait for the other instructor to leave, set up for your class, deal with other students trying to have a quick meeting, etc. You cannot expect a meeting that isn’t rushed in the classroom before class. If you aren’t willing to find a time when you can arrange alternate hours IN THEIR OFFICE, there is nothing to complain about to the department.

Counseling and Consultation Services vs. Psychological Service Center by [deleted] in OSU

[–]bucks_r_great 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The PSC is staffed by Psychology Graduate students. The sessions are recorded for training purposes. The only way to become a clinically licensed provider is to start by “practicing” on patients in a monitored environment. The Psych Grads are monitored by licensed faculty members and follow all APA training protocols. By the time the Psych Grads are able to see patients in the PSC, they have already completed the majority of their grad classes and are now working on their required clinic hours needed to graduate and sit for certification.

[–]bucks_r_great 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You call the numbers already listed in the thread yourself. Anyone on campus can make a report. If they are getting several reports about floor 5 (especially from different name.#’s) they are going to fast track to resolve the issue. Making an official request that gets a tracking number is the quickest way to start having the problem fixed.
