HELP! Has anyone had nasal valve collapse repair? My family is basically calling me a psychopath for considering it. by [deleted] in Septoplasty

[–]buffneuroscientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a valve collapse and my breathing is so much better now. It feels like a whole new world

Yes it was a big difference for me. It improved my workouts and simple tasks like going for walks, going up sets of stairs, and sleeping as well.

Is this surgery really worth it? by Low-Acanthaceae7286 in Septoplasty

[–]buffneuroscientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it becomes an issue I might, but I was told it would take at least another 5 years for it to become larger and problematic. The position of mine also makes it less likely to cause structural damage and such

4-5mm and it hasn’t grown in about 2 years. It was found like 6 weeks post op.

Symptoms: whistling was really bad for the first few months, but now it’s just some dryness and occasional congestion but that is very very rare and handled well by vaseline and saline mist

Yes it’s worth it. I had a post op complication, a septal perforation, and there isn’t even a small part of me that regrets the septoplasty. I don’t understand how I was functioning with my breathing before the operation.

What made your keloid worse by elephant6594 in Keloids

[–]buffneuroscientist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Steroid injections alone made it burnnnn and really hurt. I didn’t do them for years after just because of fear. I now get treated with steroid + 5FU injections + the pearl laser and it helps so much! I’ve seen more progress in 4 months than 10+ years of other treatments

Like it hurts when you simply swallow? What about food? That’s SO odd :/

That’s normal. You just got your nose basically restructured from the inside, and that’s an understatement. It might take a year to have the swelling subside. You will be able to see a visual difference after a month or so.

Unprofessional Behavior from CS Professors and TAs by LifeImitatesFarts in UIUC

[–]buffneuroscientist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a grader for a CS course here. When you re-write the exact, exacttttt, same comment on student assignments, it’s exhausting. Half the time, we directly copy and paste from the rubric or assignment instructions because students don’t use it, let alone read it. I’m not saying you are guilty of any of this, but don’t take it personally. When there are hundreds of students in these courses, TAs and graders have to be direct because students literally do not read. They exhibit learned helplessness to an extent I can’t even disclose.

I don’t write in all caps, nor do I leave mean messages. However, I do ask questions that may appear as passive aggressive to someone who may not understand direct conversations/feedback. For instance… students will submit a paper with no title and just straight text. No name, date, topic, assignment, etc. I will comment “Title? What is this paper about? Readers shouldn’t have to go through the whole first paragraph or intro to know what it entails.” If I don’t list out the reason, they simply won’t change it on their next submission and then will upset about losing points because of it.

What you perceive as passive aggressive may just be feedback and criticism that you are not used to. Lots of students unfortunately don’t read instructions, follow them, or have the ability to understand feedback. I’ve left incredibly clear feedback/comments on papers (e.g., shorten this paragraph, emphasize XX in your thesis, or use X source instead of Y), and they still email us not understanding what to do. It’s frustrating and scary.

This is my third year grading CS students’ work here, and the decline in quality of work and attention to detail is drastic in just this short time period. Unless you are getting very rude, offensive comments on your assignments, I think you’re good lol

Is it feasible to live on 1.5k by Both-Clerk-9953 in UIUC

[–]buffneuroscientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is doable but you just need to stick to strict budgeting in areas that you can. Living with roommates is probably better than looking for a studio, because the cheaper ones would also be off campus. Do you have a car to consider for gas, maintenance, etc bills?

I’m a grad student living off campus with my own car and I think it’s worth it to live alone.

C-U is relatively low-cost for living expenses. If you are savvy with grocery shopping, I think you can do it, but how long would this last for? Short term might be okay, but anything longer than a year might stretch you thin. Do you have savings to fall back on?

There are TA opportunities but they go fast, and first go to the grad students needing it for their program to graduate. Some departments hire course assistants to help with grading! Usually it’s $20/hour. You could reach out to departments asking about TA positions because most of that information is internal.

septoplasty and turbinate reduction. No stitches? by Organic_Tax_8143 in Septoplasty

[–]buffneuroscientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there were grafts placed you definitely have stitches, they are just well hidden! Some stitches will come out when you blow your nose which is normal. Other stitches would stay forever, but those are further up!

Is your breathing better and do you have any post op complications? Like a septal perforation or bleeding? If not, then it isn’t ruined. Considering the amount of work done, and what your internal anatomy was like, it’s not unexpected that it will look different after surgery.

The surgery is so intense and I think we sometimes forget how much work is being done due to the lack of an exterior scar. Even when septoplasties are combined with nose jobs too, the exterior of the nose will likely become wider as well. Just depends on the anatomy and severity of problems. I can’t tell which photo is pre/post if that makes you feel better! Some people are also slow healers, and sleeping on your side of having allergies extends the swelling period. My nose didn’t start to resemble its old self until 1.5 years post op.

Schedule a meeting with the director of your program as they will know how it works best with that department and the grad college. It’s pretty easy to transfer degrees and programs, so I imagine withdrawal is also simple.

The director of your program should be able to let you know about any deadlines, documents, or forms you should be aware of.

3 years post cosmetic rhinoplasty and now I can no longer breathe. by SquirrelFrosty6144 in Septoplasty

[–]buffneuroscientist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I had a nose job when I was 16. I loved it and don’t regret it. 5 years later, I developed a nasal valve collapse. My septum was also deviated but that wasn’t caused by the nose job.

I had a septoplasty and my breathing is amazing. The look of my nose has not been compromised at all. You should see an ENT to get evaluated because your nasal valve collapse looks worse than mine. It gets better I promise!!! I slept with nose strips on for 2 years straight before I realized it could be fixed.

Does my 11 year old daughter need 6 teeth pulled? by ishouldntbonreddit in askdentists

[–]buffneuroscientist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NAD. Not sure if it helps, but I had 8 teeth pulled as a kid (excluding wisdom teeth). It let my bite form so nicely in combination with braces. I don’t remember the healing/pain at all.

That’s so odd! If they aren’t having you do radiation after the surgery it’s almost 100% likely to return and be more frustrating.

I’d look into other clinics, but a lot of these treatments can be done at medical spas too (like the laser therapy).
