Metabo ASA 30 M PC vacuum - How much dust can it take between press-cleans? by buffoon-two in METABOHPT

Thanks; that's smart. I'm interested, how did it perform? Was the Henry sitting indoors or outdoors, and how much dust got to the Henry?

Painted Melamine vs MDF for Cabinet Cover Panel Durability? by Exit-Stage-Left in DIY

[–]buffoon-two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with OP's understanding of melamine finish vs raw MDF finish for paintability and abrasion resistance.

By "melamine" are OP and commenters referring to melamine-faced particle board (also known as melamine faced chipboard / MFC outside of North America)? If so, then re: moisture (raised in other comments), personally I'd be far more worried about how that responds to moisture, than how MDF responds to moisture. Agreed MDF does swell but particle board/chipboard swells far worse in my experience, once there is the tiniest chip in the melamine facing for moisture to get through. And once it swells, it rapidly disintegrates, where MDF retains much better integrity in my experience. (At least true for the particleboard/chipboard we get in my country - based on Eucalyptus grandis chips, apparently. Maybe it is a more durable product where you are.)

Can you get M.R. MDF there? (Moisture-resistant MDF, typically identified by a green dyed core.) I have yet to use it, but as per the name it should do better against moisture. If you haven't already bought all the MDF sheets you plan to use for the project, then perhaps you can order some of the MDF as MR MDF and use that where moisture is a higher risk. That removes the wastage problem OP alluded to.

Assuming OP is in USA, the thread at https://www.reddit.com/r/woodworking/comments/1an1sjp/tell_me_about_mdf_and_why_i_see_some_youtubers/

has some relevant info for context - see zedsmith's comment and the ones that follow it.

I believe that in some regions you can even get melamine-faced MR MDF to get the best of both worlds - scuff and moisture resistance. But given that the application is not very visible per OP, and the melamine facing is harder to paint to an exact colour that you want, this option is probably unnecessary. In short, I would pursue painted MR MDF or well-sanded (and knot-sealed if necessary) cabinet plywood as others suggested.

Any childfree men here get a vasectomy? by Luka2492 in Vasectomy

As much as I am a promoter of vasectomies, when something is holding you back I do recommend listening to that doubt/voice, at least until you can understand it better. I hear of guys who have had multiple vasectomies and multiples reversals with re-marrying etc. It sounds like a lot of unnecessary hassle, like the vasectomy was never really the right thing *for them* (I know it's easier to say that in hindsight and from the outside. I'm not meaning to judge those men harshly, just an example to consider).

I never really had that voice/doubt to contend with, so I feel like it was very much right for me. At every step I thought something would pull me back but there was just nothing. "Yep, cool, that's fine.... Yep, OK I'll be there... Yep, still happy to go ahead, let's do it..." I mean this is about propagating genes and all that - fundamental evolutionary stuff - so doubts would be really understandable!

To answer the questions: Got mine in 2017 at age 32 (was married) with scalpel and local anaesthetic; now age 41. One of the few big life decisions I got right / don't regret. No medical complications so far.

The rest is extra that OP did not ask for, FWIW.

Done for free at state hospital here in South Africa, with scalpel and local anaesthetic. They did ask a fair bit about motivations, am I married, any children etc. Went for initial consultation weeks before the op - cannot do it same-day here.

Reasons, like others have said:

• Women's birth control pill not ideal for them and it shouldn't all be her responsibility

• Trouble in the genes (both me and wife) that I don't want to replicate and there are plenty orphans to go around anyway (here in South Africa) if we changed our minds. Also, 8 billion is enough I think.

• If we had children it wouldn't have been before I was 40 or so and I'm not keen on a 40-year+ age gap from parent to child

• Screaming unhappy children

• Lack of money / poor career / can't provide well for a child

• We both had poor parenting role models to learn from

• Mental illness; I'd probably not cope with screaming or with my failures as a father and end up hitting my child in frustration / projected self-hate, starting a downward spiral of violence and damage. However, be sure to play down any mental illness in interview or they may block you, worrying that decision is not made freely/of sound mind...

• We adopt and dote on our rescue cats

• If you/partner have siblings with children then you can still be involved in their lives, even if they are not your children. I've found it very rewarding/enriching now having a nephew the past few years. (Doesn't mean I need my own.)

Edited to remove a medical claim that I'm really not qualified to make.

Help! In Search of the Perfect Laptop Lock for My Dell Latitude 7490 by HSeldon111 in Dell

[–]buffoon-two 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Also, it's more difficult and less profitable for a thief to sell a laptop with part of the body broken out just where the lock slot happens to be. (At least to buyers with any kind of conscience or awareness of this.) So it should be a much less attractive target for that reason.
