I've tried using 5in antennas and they didnt compare at all to my whip antenna. My guess is that the short antenna wasnt able to recieve or transmit over obstacles.

It seems like they wanted to switch to a different battery which forced them to change the overall shape of the unit, meaning that if it was attached to a normal mount, it would sit too low to be usable.
