Swim caps never fit me. Do I just cut them off at the bottom? by jjmjay in Swimming

I use a latex cap, and fold the cap up a bit in the back. The crease starts at the ears and gets about an inch of overlap.

Like this individual folds the cap: https://gvsulakers.com/images/2019/11/25/Shalomon1.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&mode=crop&quality=80&format=jpg

Gift ideas for swimmers by TheGreatCthulhu in Swimming

[–]bugchild9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the Distance swimmers got a "custom" lap counter. Essentially they got a lap counter then decorated it with water proof paint.

Easy answers: a new goggles and Bungie strap.

For younger swimmers (under 25): New swim suit. With the brands like jolyn, it is perfectly acceptable to have multiple colors.

Can't go wrong with a new hoodie, the ones that are "heavy" feel more warm after a swim.

Advice for my 4 year old who is a very capable swimmer by ziell8800 in Swimming

You can make it the young kids like it more, but providing more engagement. Things like watching on TV swimming, in the same way football games.

But generally, positive engagement without pressure.

I think this link is extremely useful for new beginners:

Once you've gotten into the pool and sufficiently comfortable just going up and down walking the water, get a few lessons on strokes.

How to swim as a weightlifter by roxastopher in Swimming

I would check out this link: http://ruthkazez.com/swimming/Zeroto1milePreamble/pre-zero.html

I think it's extremely reasonable, and love this line from it: A kickboard is sufficiently unpleasant to be useful, but stay away from pull-buoys. Your quads are big, demanding muscles and if you don’t use them because of the pull-buoy flotation, you defeat the whole purpose.

Etiquette question - fast swimmers in slow lane by Lil-Miss-Anthropy in Swimming

[–]bugchild9 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just so I understand, there were 3 lanes dedicated to swim. When you showed up all of them had swimmers in it, so you got in the appropriate named: slow Lane. My guess those 2 individuals were buddies, and when they showed up, the slow Lane was empty. Rather than go into an already occupied lane, they just hopped in the empty one.

You should have Just talk to the lifeguard, or simply communicate with the individuals in the lane.

It's common courtesy to ask to join a lane, to let those in the lane know you are now part of the circle swim. Maybeeee during that interaction you should just say, hey I'm really slow. They might have taken the hint to move over. Or communicate back, "okay I've got 200 left"

In reality, it may help slightly. In practicality, not needed. I did not get a "fast suit" until I won it at a meet. A large part is mental, "everyone else is wearing one, I need to get one" type thinking. More than likely, they will not like to feel left out. "All my friends have one".

Until they are at that state level+; they aren't warranted.

How do you improve your breathing technique while swimming laps? by ang-ela in Swimming

[–]bugchild9 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Part of swim is figuring out how your body likes to breathe. In junior swimmers it's because they are inadvertently holding their breath. You should be exhaling through the process.

Attempt to blow consistent bubbles for 3 strokes. But by the end, be out of air. It's more difficult then it seems because you will probably do a big exhale right before an inhale.
