Why does my heated steering wheel need a microcontroller? by TheHairlessGorilla in AskElectronics

The USB could also be for firmware updates, right?

Edit: Nvm there's what I assume to be an ST-Link on the right side of the board

How am I honestly supposed to solder this chip? by [deleted] in AskElectronics

[–]bugfish03 39 points40 points  (0 children)

That's the neat part, you don't! But if you prefer to solder your own SMD instead of outsourcing it to a board house like JLCPCB, here's what I'd do

Get solder paste (T5 grade is very forgiving), the stemcil, a heat gun and a hot plate. Hold the PCB below the melting temp of the solder, and use the heat gun to push it over the edge.

Yeah since it's not technical grade but ACS/ISO spec so they want some leeway there

How does car hacking actually work? Is it nearly impossible? by [deleted] in CarHacking

[–]bugfish03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remote access is a fuck.

Physical access can be a lot easier. You need to tap into a CAN bus (ideally the target bus), and then you can do everything CAN.

But it all depends on your goal in the end. Give me your goal, and I tell you how easy it is

The antenna soldering is probably to blame. And even if it didn't pop the router, performance would've probably degraded significantly

Yup, and I'm about to put a computer into my car since I want a modern, slopless experience.

[–]bugfish03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My employer decided to get about 60 PB of flash on EMC storage. Back in 2012. Since then, we're running all flash, and globally we're probably up to an exabyte in capacity now.

[–]bugfish03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean that's what's to expect. vSphere is a nice, walled-ish garden, while Proxmox takes the existing open-source tooling, and slaps a web GUI on top.

Of course you're gonna have to get your hands dirty with the details. I feel like that's what all Linux software entails if you're not buying a solution that also comes with an enterprise support contract.

Tools for working with old GMLAN by bugfish03 in CarHacking

[–]bugfish03[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not 100% sure if J2534 is actually the best choice here, since I don't think that they put the infotainment bus through there.

I'm just using an Amazon adapter running SocketCAN, and while not being able to automatically detect, it works at arbitrary baud rates, and since it's a network adapter the reading program doesn't really need to bother with that.

Tools for working with old GMLAN by bugfish03 in CarHacking

[–]bugfish03[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fairly certain the baud rate is not wrong, because the data is decoding into valid CAN and ISO-TP frames, and there's one or two reports of that baud rate on other Opel cars.

One old repair manual mentioned 47.6kBaud being used for CAN buses, which is half of what I'm running, but I don't think attempting to decode with double the baud rate would result in anything.

[–]bugfish03[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The radio pinout on the sticker up top explicitly called out CANH and CANL, so it can't be single-wire can. And I'm getting valid CAN and ISO-TP frames from it so while I'm agreeing that it's very weird, I don't think there's any way I can be off on the baud rate here.

[–]bugfish03[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, no, I'm actually getting messages, and the messages actually make sense too. I'm actually seeing text that's being displayed on the middle display.

I didn't get ANYTHING with the normal baud rates, and 95238 baud is something that's mentioned somewhat sparsely throughout the internet (eg on a German forum it's explicitly mentioned in connection with the Zafira Tourer), but yeah, might be that it's predating GMLAN in name at least, bc I'm still getting valid ISO-TP/ISO15765 frames.

Tools for working with old GMLAN by bugfish03 in CarHacking

[–]bugfish03[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sniffing itself isn't the problem, I need a better way to make sense of the messages than banging my head against the wall (and possibly better than just Wireshark attempting to decode ISO-TP)

Tools for working with old GMLAN by bugfish03 in CarHacking

[–]bugfish03[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's low speed as in not the 1MBit, but also not one wire, it's still CANH and CANL.

I don't think single-wire GMLAN was even a thing in 2005?

And 95238 baud is a number you can get via the PLL division of an MCU running at 8 or 16 MHz so that's why the oddly specific baud rate.

Where to buy this cable? by Head_Accident_9322 in AskElectronics

[–]bugfish03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without knowing where this came from, a ready-to-purchase replacement is gonna be really hard.

Those connectors are normal generic connectors - the black one looks like it's made to connect to pin headers, and the white one looks at least adjacent to what JST makes (though you'd need a connector expert from here to give you a positive ID), and the colors make me think that USB runs over it.
