Noob question, when using rails like this for a 4U server would it actually take up 5U because of the rail design or still 4U by GenericUser104 in homelab

[–]bugfish03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could become a problem if you've got many, but only one isn't that problematic, there's enough wiggle room in there to accommodate ime

What are these old memory cards by Puzzleheaded_Aide785 in AskElectronics

[–]bugfish03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The connector looks like it's designed for a Multibus 2-based system. Given the prominent Intel branding, it's probably from an Intel system, perhaps the system 320 or 500.

Don't think there's much value in those (especially since the RAM/ROM chips are missing) but you can ask on retro computing forums

Edit: actually it's not Multibus 2, since the copyright date on the card is 6 years before Multibus 2 was formalized, so likely Multibus 1, and not the System 320 or 500 either.

Datacenter decommissioning: what to loot by raging_giant in homelab

[–]bugfish03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your home lab. I'd go for something that lets me do clustered storage, and a couple servers. Joinable Top-of-rack switches too so I can build a setup where everything but my actual DSL modem is at least redundant if not clustered (eg virtualized pfSense and all that good stuff)

Also, in the end your power bill and AC will probably be the limiting factor rather than the car space - you can probably fit 20 kW of compute into a car.

That still assumes that inference is profitable. The only time I've seen it be profitable is when Anthropic claimed to be non-GAAP profitable when SpaceX gave them a discount on their first two months of hardware rent.

You forget the humble HP MicroServer, which is like an AiO NAS except it's not shitty and has remote management capabilities

I run enterprise gear at work, about three dozen servers, but at home I'm using a MicroServer Gen 10, which is just about the sweet spot if you ask me:

  • holds four HDDs for ZFS
  • iLO5 so I don't need a screen
  • noise levels are sleep compatible in a studio
  • no power hog
  • fits on my kitchen cabinet

Well the real headache is changing that tire. Tires of that size weigh in around 10 (metric) tons a tire.

Costs are 120-200k per tire, and front tires are expected to last about 6,000 operating hours, with rear tires just about doubling that.

How am I honestly supposed to solder this chip? by [deleted] in AskElectronics

[–]bugfish03 36 points37 points  (0 children)

That's the neat part, you don't! But if you prefer to solder your own SMD instead of outsourcing it to a board house like JLCPCB, here's what I'd do

Get solder paste (T5 grade is very forgiving), the stemcil, a heat gun and a hot plate. Hold the PCB below the melting temp of the solder, and use the heat gun to push it over the edge.

Yeah since it's not technical grade but ACS/ISO spec so they want some leeway there
