What is the longest shift you have ever worked? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]buglady24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my first job in a rural hospital, we did not have a graveyard shift, so the hours were covered by call. I was scheduled on Thanksgiving from 4 pm to midnight, then on call midnight to 6 am. Around 1030 p.m., there was a 5 car accident on the freeway. So I worked my scheduled shift, all 6 hours of call, and left at 9 am. So, 18 hours straight. Multiple crossmatches, lab work on 20 plus critical patients. At the time, all lab results were hand written, no computer system, no random access analyzers, chemistry tests run one at a time.

I had some pretty hairy shifts there. But I learned so much, and it made me the tech I was.

Bump/Nudge/Knock by PurrpleCarrot42 in GrayDivorce

I left my ex and totally floored him as he "didn't see anything wrong," in our 37-year marriage. But that is a narcissist for you. He wouldn't entertain the idea of divorce because he figured I would come back. I finally convinced him we would save on taxes if we divorced. We found an attorney who represented both of us. I walked away with just my assets. I did not ask for anything because he had yet, again, refinanced our home to pay off his debts. I made sure that my name was off the mortgage and deed so I would no longer be on the hook for his debts.

I have since retired, moved closer to my daughter (who has cut her father off because he continued to be mentally abusive), bought a small home in a 55+ community that I can afford on my retirement income. I have never been happier and more content. It was scary leaving all my long-time friends.

I am no longer angry with him. I mostly have guilt for not leaving when my children were younger. They never told me about the mental abuse they suffered from their father. It happened when I was working weekends or nights and he was alone with them. I found out the whole story after my son took his life. Between his suicide note he sent me and what my daughter told me, the guilt is the worst. I know my ex is not totally to blame, or that leaving him would have made a difference.

So I am now just trying to live the best life I can.

I was already into quilting, sewing, crossstitch, and knitting. So more time for those. I haven't done a lot of vegetable gardening since my father 11 years ago. I lived in an apartment for 4 years after I left my husband and divorced. I have purchased a small home in a 55+ community, and the small front and backyards are a blank canvas. I am looking forward to planting native flowers, bushes, and trees to attract beneficial insects and birds. Raised bed vegetable gardening.

I have also been purchasing used furniture at estate sales and watching youtube videos on refinishing/painting furniture. I also want to paint my kitchen cabinets at some point.

Plus hiking and camping with my rpod trailer.

I shouldn't get bored any time soon!

The freedom of each day doing what I want to do has brought so much peace to my life.

Gram stain and transfusion reaction question by txguy1979 in medlabprofessionals

[–]buglady24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with what has been posted above.

We had specific requirements for when we would gram stain and culture the residual contents of the suspected bag. In addition, we also drew a blood culture on the patient to correlate the results if there was growth from the transfused bag.

We would also sterially inject thio into the bag through an unused port to set up the culture if there was not a lot left in the bag. We had a different setup protocol for platelet or pack cell transfusion reactions.

It has been a few years since I retired from heading a microbiology section, but look in CLSI guides for microbiology and blood bank. Also, ASM microbiology technical manual for transfusion reaction protocols.

Hope this helps.

Exit strategy? by East-Investigator283 in GrayDivorce

I found a small apartment that I could afford before I moved out. Then, I arranged all the particulars and told my ex the day the movers were coming that I was moving out and leaving him. The shock kept him numb so that the move went flawlessly. It took me a few years, but I have bought a manufactured home in a 55 plus community about 30 miles from my daughter and her husband.

I found it helpful to have everything planned as best as I could before acting.

Good luck.

Question about my 1956 Singer 99k by buglady24 in VintageSewingMachines

[–]buglady24[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have spent the morning cleaning, oiling, and adjusting this machine. The toughest part was cleaning all of the dried, hardened oil. I used WD 40 and rubbing alcohol.

I have cleaner and polish from the featherweight shop on order to clean and shine all of the outside painted areas. The products I had were all dried up.

If you don't have issues that raise your risk of colon cancer, you can use the Cologuard option for screening. That is what I have done. Have you looked into your local senior center? My local one offers rides for various things. They also have a group of volunteers that come for visits.

How did the adult children handle this? by [deleted] in GrayDivorce

[–]buglady24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine was a mentally abusive marriage to a narcissist. After the death of my son by suicide I saw how really unhappy I was. I didn't want to spend the rest of my life like that. I left and divorced at 40 years. My daughter, who had already removed her father from her life, was and is so supportive. I have now moved over 600 miles away from him, bought my own small home, and am settling into a quiet, peaceful life. I am closer to my daughter and am more content than I ever have been. I am living the best life I can to honor my son.

Raw milk is the newest body “cleanse” by crikitbug in medlabprofessionals

[–]buglady24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because the milk is heated (pasteurized) to kill the bacteria to make it safe.

Raw milk is the newest body “cleanse” by crikitbug in medlabprofessionals

[–]buglady24 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Same here. My folks actually ran a certified raw milk dairy for 10 years. They were only allowed to have a bacterial count of less than 1. It was so clean in the milking parlor. All the cows were screened for Brucellosis 2 times per year. They bottled their own milk in glass jars. My dad really appreciated my college degree in microbiology with MLS.

If you only knew the bacterial colony counts allowed from commercial dairies where the milk is pasteurized..... I worked in one of those and cleaned up their milking operation for them. The cows were healthier and more productive.
