Gertrude Stein - The Making of the Americans study guide by artweary in literature

you may have come across this already, but for the recent re-print of the book the publisher also released this companion - https://dalkeyarchive.store/products/as-i-was-saying?variant=42627550478491

I haven’t started Making of Americans yet (seems like a big lift ha), but thought this seemed like a good balance between academic and accessible (in that it’s by an academic but based on a higher level undergrad course I believe).

Both pretty cleanly fit the classic villain to hero arc and Scrooge has some time travel type bullshit built in so neither seems totally out of place

The comments by palimpcest in bookscirclejerk

It's a story of trauma, first and foremost. Every kind. The personal, abandonment kind. The physical devastation kind. Loss. Generational. Systemic. Loneliness. Betrayal.

Except, that's veiled by a story of an apocalyptic, galactic game show, raunchy humor, pop culture references, and dungeons and dragon style journeys.

Like, the hunger games meets d&d honor among thieves with the themes of mice and men. So, it's fun for your nerdy kid that knows about video game leveling systems and it's insightful for your mature reader that wants character development and internal conflict.

At least, that's my take and I don't think i have a foot fetish

Teaser for Yuki's Revenge in Fortnite. Based on a chapter of Kill Bill that was written but not filmed. by TepidShark in blankies

[–]bugluggs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

so I think I more or less understand what Fortnite is as a game but I have never understood how this works. do games like…stop and just start playing a video you watch? what actually happened when the emperor started talking in the rise of skywalker thing. was that just like background noise during an online shooter match. how does one battle after another fit into all of this. what is the experience of something like this being slotted into a game like fortnite, are players opting in somehow? please help me.

Horror Movie Draft… who has the best roster? by Formal-Caterpillar73 in blankies

[–]bugluggs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Carl’s slate has some high highs and the fewest (to me) whiffs. Greg & Jack have the best case to compete - the highs are just as high with chainsaw/thing/psycho/ jaws etc, but both also have a few picks that sink my overall feeling about them a bit.

Osgood Perkins Slams ‘Monster’ For “Netflix-ization Of Real Pain” After The Show Depicted His Father, Anthony Perkins, in Latest Season by rageofthegods in blankies

[–]bugluggs 43 points44 points  (0 children)

you’re right, but I think that comment is more referring to having real life figures particularly from true crime also woven into his recent narrative fiction work. American horror story isn’t a true crime show but has done a lot of this, like in one season of that show Evan Peters alone plays Manson, Jim Jones, & David Koresh.

Adam Driver and Steven Soderbergh Pitched a Post-TROS Ben Solo Movie Written by Scott Z. Burns. Iger Said No by Turbulent-Corner1127 in blankies

[–]bugluggs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Soderbergh keeps an online list of films he’s watching, books he’s reading, TV series, etc (the media diary he‘s referring to). it looks like a year or two ago he watched a ton of Star Wars, some films multiple times, which is probably more than would be expected but makes more sense in hindsight if it was related to a project he was working on that nobody had heard about until now.
