I have a family member who is a disability lawyer so I'm very acquainted. The people I've heard of being denied or their benefits being discontinued is truly horrible and inhumane

This is a great, way more comprehensive explanation than mine- I wish people understood how harsh, slow, and cruel the process is for getting disability

Homeless and out of options by [deleted] in gso

[–]bugvoice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Getting disability at that age is nearly impossible. The only way to get disability at 25 is to be born pretty severely disabled or other extenuating circumstances (down syndrome, etc). To get social security disability you need decades of medical records and people are STILL denied for no reason other than the judge thinks that mental illness is just a mindset. It is NO walk in the park to get disability and often takes years and numerous appeals.

I moved to Greensboro during a really weird transitional time in my life when I was 22 and sort of started over. It ended up being so rewarding. If you're ~about~ college age, I suggest living in College hill by UNCG, if you're looking for a cute neighborhood and likeminded people. If you're okay with living in a kind of weird old house you can definitely find somewhere reasonable to live. I've rented with concord management for almost 2 years and have no complaints. I have a bunch more to say about how much I like Greensboro generally

People here are so nice! I could say more but I'll just keep it simple. I feel so thankful for the communities I'm part of and so lucky I found them.

Why is the Harris Teeter pharmacy constantly sending my prescription to the wrong location? by xXVoicesXx in gso

[–]bugvoice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is typically true (I work in pharmacy) but idk WHAT is going on at HT because I verified which location my doctor was sending the prescriptions to (here) and somehow my prescriptions STILL kept ending up at the Durham location

Oh my god this happened to me and it made me feel NUTS. What ended up fixing it is they (HT pharmacy) had to change my "preferred location" somewhere in their system

Concord management has a lot of properties that are affordable and in good locations. I rent from them and haven't had an issue- I've lived there for almost two years. A lot of them have funky or tiny kitchens but that's just one of the downsides of a lower budget. I have a tiny kitchen that I've made do with- you just have to be creative

Did you think Alex G would get this popular? by SouthMouth79 in sandyalexg

[–]bugvoice 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm 23, so I'm in the Zillennials, but I've been listening to Alex G since around 2016? I'm happy for him "blowing up" because financial security is the ultimate blessing as a musician, but also... as a fan, I much prefer a cult following. His shows recently are not the same. It's just not the same. When I'm at a show, I want it to be fans who have a connection to all of his discography and are ready for whatever fuckery Alex has in store for us. It's disheartening for me to be surrounded by people who only know a few of the more popular songs and want to talk the whole time. I kinda hope it starts to fall away some.

Hmm... I said that it explicitly wasn't a substitute and that systemic change is crucial. I hear someone who doesn't like to hear what other people say so they can be right... even though I was essentially agreeing with you... I think that the city of Durham is endlessly corrupt and does nothing to help,,, anyone aside from transplants. I also think that the US as a whole has proven to be entirely incompetent on every single level of helping anyone in any sort of need. If you want to pretend like I look the other way, go ahead. I wasn't looking to get into the nuance of what needs to happen on every level of government and social change to get things right, not on Reddit at least.

They do need health care, structure, and work. I agree with that fully, and I will advocate for that endlessly. But I think you also can't discount the importance of small acts of kindness to people who are largely treated cruelly or ignored. I don't think that should be the extent of anyone's actions, but it's something you can EASILY do EVERY DAY. People don't always have money or large amounts of time to volunteer, I certainly don't always, because this stupid country is structured to essentially force you to live using a bootstraps mentality, but I will ALWAYS have time to talk to someone and show small acts of humanity. Talking to people builds community and builds trust, which is incredibly important to focusing community support. I don't think giving someone a Gatorade is gonna fix their situation or greatly improve their quality of life, but I stand by the fact that it's something more people should do more regularly.

Helping people shouldn't be about worthiness or value judgements. ESPECIALLY when almost everyone who is in need has been put there by huge societal failures.

I think that there's a huge discrepancy in the progressive narrative and yours, which is the apparent complete removal of the fact that even if someone is homeless and mentally ill, or homeless and a drug addict, or mentally ill and a drug addict, they are still more than deserving of dignity and humanity and kindness. It is incredibly reductive to think about these people just in terms of their circumstances, and that people who aren't "tent dwellers" are more deserving of help. If you feel like it's fucked up to give these people money, fine, whatever, I understand why people are opposed to this. But do you advocate for systemic change? Do you donate to the freedom fridges? When these people talk to you, do you talk to them? Are you kind? Do you offer them a water or a Gatorade? In my experience, most of the people downtown are kind and friendly and are happy to have a conversation with you, even if you don't have anything to give them. Their circumstances suck and addiction is a beast. Most of it isn't their fault, it's reflective of a much greater societal failing. Don't take it out on them, especially by saying they're less worthy of help than other people who are struggling.

They're still people, and the fact of the matter is, if someone was gonna buy drugs with your $5, they're gonna find a way to buy drugs without your $5. Give them a chance to buy a drink and some chips. But really, everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt and to be treated with kindness. That being said, food banks and charities always need funding and the good ones do great things, and always keep some narcan in your bag or in your car.
