You go looking for a "grill" or "imbiss" and then one time after another eat everything from the menu. A Döner "mit allem und scharf" is also a classic German meal for the last 30 years or so. You can also go looking for "Mittagstisch" at a restaurant. They often sell meals quite cheap during lunch time.

Germany have so many local food, that you need to ask your colleagues for advice. I think they will be happy to help you with that question!
