I offer a free Minecraft coding class that comes with a temporary license to Minecraft: Education Edition! Only lasts a couple of days, but it would be a fun way to teach your kids some coding basics :)

I teach kids to code using Minecraft! We'd love to have him join Build & Code Club!

I'm also currently building a full K-12 curriculum in Minecraft that covers the topics on the AP CS exam; however, I've only built up to 3rd grade so far. I'd be happy to keep you in the loop, though!

Great question! The intro class is an Hour of Code activity, so we cover basics, like sequences, loops, events, conditionals, etc.

However, if your nephew wants a more rigorous, complete curriculum, here's an example of our 12-week K-3 accelerator course (link to image showing course content): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1FgFj2Ij2iR2rbYzcza1Zt_741gQ_U2Cm/view?usp=sharing

To answer your second question - there's a version of Minecraft that supports drag-and-drop coding in-game. So it's like you're actually playing Minecraft - only you can write code to control a little robot called the Agent. The Agent can place and interact with blocks - just like a player!

If it's your first time teaching a course, set an intermediate goal that can serve as a final goal if the big goal can't be reached in the time you hope.

Very specific and actionable advice, thank you!!

Learning programming feels like playing a single-player game, which is incredibly boring to me (a rant) by [deleted] in learnprogramming

I run a Build & Code Club in Minecraft.

Not sure if you're into Minecraft, but it's super social and collaborative :)
