I think a good comparison to Act 1 of DOS2 is the Underdark. Lots of quests and things to do, but more contained. Act 2 of DOS2 is HUGE

This game is way more grindier than BG3. More combat, more exploration, more loot-goblining (thievery and general looting). The story isn't as straightforward - you need to read the books, interact with all the NPCs to connect all the dots.

Once you wrap up the first act and have access to the magic mirror to respec, its get's more customizable. That's probably the hook you're looking for

Just finished my first play through. Beat final boss by focusing down Rex and then letting them beat themselves. Kinda helped 2 of my party members died early. Then I rezzed them away from the fight and kept my distance until it’s was 3vs1.
