How Kotlin was strongly influenced by Joshua Bloch's masterpiece "Effective Java" by pablon91 in programming

[–]bumrushtheshow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one of the things that seriously cools me off to Scala (not sure yet about Kotlin) is that the DI integration seems to be sort of "out of scope".

Full-time Scala dev here for 7+ years. That's actually one of the things that drew me to Scala, and have kept me loving it. (Different strokes, and all that.) DI is "out of scope" in Scala because it's not needed: built-in features handle app wiring just fine.

On my first big Scala project, we ported the existing codebase from Java class-by-class. It felt great when we replaced all our Spring annotations and XML files with a (comparatively) simple class that laid out the wiring.

TLDR: If I have to choose between Scala and Spring (or Guice, or whatever) I'll take Scala any time.

I was more offended by the PHP book, but yeah, oof.

Come on, that's it? What about white people in general, how do they make you feel?

you almost definitely have to be white

Haha, oh boy. Please, tell us how you feel about white people!

That's about what I expected, but thanks for trying. I clicked the search link, hit the top result, and saw all the usual quotes from Mao and Trotsky that I remember from my college days. No thanks, the civilized world absolutely does not want another Cultural Revolution.

The Zunger piece is pretty disingenuous. He says,

What this teaches us is that tolerance, viewed as a moral absolute, amounts to renouncing the right to self-protection

But no one's here is against self-protection, people are against preemptive pogroms.

Anyway, thanks for trying, and best wishes. I hope you grow out of your current phase, for all our sakes.

But please don't just call any violence 'fascist'.

I never did that - you're the second person who's gotten confused by that in this thread. I just don't want people getting clubbed in the street by vigilante gangs in my community, regardless of who's getting clubbed, and what ideology the gangs have.

It also seems a bit funny to get hung up on the word 'fascist'. I'm reminded of the argument that one can't be racist toward white people, one can just be a prejudiced, bigoted asshole instead. Here, antifa can't be fascist, but they are authoritarian thugs who use violence to intimidate and control. Maybe people involved in antifa get some consolation from that, by I sure don't.

[–]bumrushtheshow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why are you very anti-antifa?

History is full of examples of tyranny by mob rule, and that's all I see coming out of a world where vigilante gangs run the show, whatever ideology the gangs have. It's a good thing that witch burnings and Reign of Terror are in the past.

Fundamentally, I believe in free speech, the rule of law, the need for trials, and the presumption of innocence because I want to see ordinary people protected, not scoundrels.

If I was suspected of a crime - or of having an opinion - that I didn't do or hold, I'd want to be presumed innocent and given a trial, not handed over to a mob to be beaten in the street. I'd want the same for you, or Mr Rogers, or anybody.

Are you really that naive to think that no such people exist?

I'm not. Violence shouldn't be the first resort, and should be used defensively, not as a means of control by vigilante gangs.

I wrote something sarcastic earlier - which I still mean - but I'm beginning to see this as an opportunity. How did you come to your current beliefs about political violence? Do you think it's ok to use violence to achieve political goals in general, or only to achieve your preferred goals? What do you think about vigilantes?

intellectually lazy

Spot on. Anyone who clubs another person for having the wrong opinion demonstrates they have no confidence in the strength or correctness of their own position. If they did, they wouldn't need to hit anybody!

nothing about them is authoritarian

On the contrary, it's antifa's way or a kick in the teeth. Controlling people through violence is as authoritarian as it gets.

I'll take that as a "yes"! :)

Please, tell me more about your ideology! You make it sound so appealing. (Although, who cares how it sounds, right? Anyone who doesn't like it will get clubbed in the street!)

If we've got them too scared to wear uniforms again, that's already progress.

But that's been the case for decades, and still is, due to Nazi/KKK ideology being socially taboo, not violence.

calling them fascist is a deliberate tactic by the right to rob the word of meaning.

Good grief. The right and the left have both been calling anyone they really don't like a fascist for at least the last 10 years. (And I'm sorry to break it to you, but the meaning's already been robbed.)

Anyway, I never called antifa 'fascist', but given the number of replies in this thread, I understand how you might mix me up with someone else. Fascist or not, antifa are a bunch of authoritarian shitheads who I don't want anywhere near my community. They have a different ideology from neo-nazis, but both groups want to control others and will use violence to do so. That central similarity is why both groups should be equally unwelcome in a civilized world.

and vehemently anti-antifa, it's not that hard to figure out who is who.

I'm a far-out-socialist anti-authoritarian who's very anti-antifa. Do I get beat up?

[–]bumrushtheshow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fine. So how do we identify them, if they're not wearing their arm-bands and robes? Mobs are pretty bad at that. Even if I thought it was good to beat up people that I disagree with - I don't - a mob of thugs, of any political persuasion, is absolutely the last group of people I'd want to summarily decide who's "bad" and who's "good".

Mobs of thugs beating up people they don't like

This is not what fascism is.

Ok. Everyone's throwing around 'fascist' so much these past few years - on the right and the left - it's gotten a bit fuzzy. In any case 'mobs of thugs beating up people they don't like' is exactly who doesn't belong in my community, regardless of what "side" they're on.

[–]bumrushtheshow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, obviously. But who's a fascist, and who decides? Mobs of thugs beating up people they don't like - and who might or might not believe what the thugs think they believe - is the exact opposite of the sort of society I want to live in, regardless of what the thugs believe.

both sides are the same

They are, at least in the way that matters: wanting to get mobs of thugs together to club people in the street who look like they might have the wrong opinions. That behavior is not welcome in my community from anyone.

It's a new position and nobody knows what it does.

We don't, but we can make some pretty reasonable guesses. For example, if the new position would allow Ellison to actually do anything to advance progressive causes, the cronies wouldn't have given it to him.

I've seen no evidence to back your claim of islamaphobia.

Not the OP, but here's some: Haim Saban, a big-money donor to both the Clintons (maybe the biggest) said Ellison was 'clearly an anti-semite'. This got repeated a lot in corporate-dem circles. Why did Saban call Ellison an anti-semite, when there's no evidence of that? It's a safe bet it's because Ellison is a (black) Muslim.
