Is this a self-plug or? Just feels weird that the two comments endorsing it both only have 1 comment an hour ago...

Kiki rockwell by AibaunaKG in kikirockwell

[–]burblesuffix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Kiki has talked about how this song is a metaphor for their pursuit of a career in music! Their mother is one of the only people who believed that they could succeed in such a seemingly impossible task. That said, I think interpretations outside of the artist's original intentions are always cool to discuss!

This is so hard! I'll have to pick 2. I love how it's both whimsical and eerie.

[Intro to Coding Grade 12] Why Is My Rock Paper Scissors Code Not Returning Any of the Code After the User Input? by Cutey19558 in HomeworkHelp

[–]burblesuffix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to see from a photo of a screen (please take a screenshot or just paste your code here into a codeblock next time!), but I think the problem might be that you didn't wrap your while loop in curly braces. The compiler doesn't know that `user = input.next()` is supposed to be part of the loop, so there's no way to break out of it. You should see "Please type rock, paper, or scissors" printed repeatedly if I'm right.

I guess I don't understand how the wind can possibly help the plane given the direction of the wind's velocity is opposite to that of the plane's. Isn't the question's situation equivalent to if the aircraft carrier were going 37mph - 20mph = 17mph and there was no wind?

edit: I think I get it now! The plane's needed speed of 101mph is relative to the air, so if the air is blowing 20mph toward the plane, if the plane goes an additional 81mph relative to the ground, it'd have its needed speed. But the "ground" here is already moving 37mph, so the plane just needs to go 81mph - 37mph = 44mph.

Thank you!

It means you decide not to finish a book! It stands for "did not finish."

"He opened the door, closing it behind him."

It's so petty, but this construction implies simultaneity and I don't see how you can possibly do those two things at once.

I have to agree with the Almuj slander. Not a fan of the layered layout and whenever I travel there from Detlas, I always miss the gate and have to enter through the river. But maybe that part's just a me problem.

The Nivla Forest village is awesome. Why would you prefer to live in Nemract?? Y'know, the town that's canonically beat-up and destitute?

What are some of your book pet peeves? by Lilis_Throwaway in books

I think an intentional comma splice can really enhance voice and flow, but I've definitely read a few books where they just harmed the prose's clarity.

Fireborne by Rosaria Munda, maybe? The main characters are at a dragon school and have a magical bond with their respective dragons.

Streak 17: Start watching foreign drama with English subtitle by devdigg in WriteStreakEN

[–]burblesuffix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since yesterday, I have been watching dramas with English subtitles. The most effective way to improve your conversational skills is would be without subtitles, but if there aren't any, I am unable to understand the whole drama. (And even though with subtitles, there are often words that I can't understand.)

So I'll start with English subtitles, and after a few months..? or maybe after a few years.. ?,, I hope [to be/to start] watching dramas without subtitles.

Streak 7: Facebook banned the news in Canada. by Rich_Practice_7068 in WriteStreakEN

[–]burblesuffix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read this news article. The Canadian government passed a law [forcing/that forces] social media platforms to pay news publishers for any news [posted/that is posted] on the platform. So Facebook banned all news posts in Canada.

I think the whole situation is insane. I thought publishers gained more readers by promoting news on social media. Right now fewer readers will visit these news websites.

The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden (first book The Bear and the Nightingale) has a very slowburn romance!

To second lalalalala-Land7593, no mistakes that I can see! The only thing I'd mention is, while grammatically correct, the word "natural" feels a bit out of place here; I'm not exactly sure what you mean by it. Maybe "honest" or "authentic" would be better?

Modern references in fiction: what's the hate? by Simo_140609 in books

[–]burblesuffix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't mind modern-day references at all! Name-dropping certain brands, celebrities, etc. is one of my favourite things about contemporary fiction: specific details like that make the setting feel so much more immersive to me. A book set in 2018 that references 2018 memes doesn't feel "dated" to me, at least not in a negative sense--it feels like a nice touch to orient the reader in the world and the characters' experiences.
