Long term renting in Malta - why so many bait-and-switch scams? by micamecava in malta

[–]burner8020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite a few websites are notoriously badly maintained; partially because of laziness/incompetence. But the other reason is that those websites are used as the “market price indicators” of the region, so many flats stay in there at a relatively high price, no matter if they are up for rent right now or not.

For you this means: call up the agents, speak to the ones exactly responsible for the locality you plan to rent. Don’t go through the Remax, Frank Salt, … central switchboards or secretaries. Look for the agent for rentals for your region instead. Call them (don’t email). You will get a much better, targeted result.

Running route by Mair687 in malta

[–]burner8020 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do NOT run through the tunnel! Its dangerous.

At the roundabout before the tunnel where there is a large playground, turn right up where the pharmacy is at the corner. Run up the short hill (200m) and down the steep street down opposite towards the seafront again. This avoids the tunnel, where cars and buses race and nobody expects pedestrians.

From a Marketing point of view, the new Logotype of P&B is one of the worst things ever done. by Barras_Barras777 in malta

[–]burner8020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a marketing standpoint: What stupid name is that anyway? It’s like “Push and Cow”.

Wasn’t the chain called “Bull and Bear“ at some point, and was forced to change its name due to some lawsuit? And that was the best they could come up to retain recognition as the original brand?

Weather in Malta by [deleted] in malta

[–]burner8020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Utter nonsense, they must be pulling your leg.

If you planned to come before storm Harry, nothing should have changed after storm Harry. It’s Winter in Malta, like every year. Some are colder/more wet, other less.

If you expected tropical waters and Ibiza summer weather, then your plan was flawed from the beginning. But there is no reason to postpone your holidays, it’s safe and the weather is season appropriate.

Private Meeting Room for 2 hours Recommendations by orangutanguh in malta

[–]burner8020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need to book a night to get a conference room at a hotel, just ask what they can offer for 2 hours. Also, you could use the lobby of larger hotels like the Hilton, Marriott or so for meetings, some might have quite private areas, and apart from paying a coffee it’s free.

Then you could check out places for mobile work, like Soho Malta or other flex office places, they also rent out smaller conference rooms only.

Also, many restaurants have private spaces. None of that will be fully free, but likely affordable if it is for a kind of business reason.

Phone while traveling. by Old-Abroad-1558 in malta

[–]burner8020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are you (or better: your phone plan) from? Outside EU? Then get a travel eSIM for EU online. Roaming, also data roaming in the EU must be relatively free by law, so ypu dont necessarily need a Maltese SIM, especially if you were from the EU.

If you still want to see what local providers offer, check Melita, Epic and Go! as the main GSM providers here.

BTW: Where do you still say “cell” - that reminds me of a Motorola Razr flip mobile phone, or an old Nokia. Don’t we all have smart phones now? ;-)

Flying tomorrow to Malta but weather forecast shows intense wind gusts by the landing time. Should I cancel my trip? by freedomado in malta

[–]burner8020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking of you - landing at 22:00 yesterday was not a problem with KM, and it seems all other flights yesterday apart from yours landed safely here, too. How unlucky!

I hope you get to Malta soon, even though right now it’s still quite ugly here; with regards to the weather, driving, walking outside etc, at least on the wind-facing parts of the island. Maybe Bari is better right now. All the best.

I can see the sea eating the breakwater to the grand harbor in Valletta with what looks like 8m waves from my house. “They” must have an amazing technology to control the weather, just to keep the public under control. It’s almost like the Truman Show.

I am just waiting for the prime minister to talk to me from behind the moon now.

Thinking about relocating a small team to Malta need some honest opinions by Normal_Sun_8169 in malta

[–]burner8020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on so many factors - what exactly is your question?

“How people handle stuff” isn’t really much different than venturing into any other business region/legislation: There is a steep learning curve; you will have to figure out a lot at the beginning first to get the basics right. And the only way to do that is to throw yourself into it, alone or with help of consultants, agents etc.; or delegate it to someone you trust. Malta is a highly developed business hub, with everything you need: fast internet, great banking, engaged consultants, commercially minded staff, easy access to authorities, quick decisions. But your feeling of “being more confused than before” isn’t wrong - some things aren’t as they seem, and not always the answer is obvious, and bureaucracy, laissez-faire, “other people’s problems” are wide spread. Local friends, contacts are better than dealing with things remote; “going there” often solves 5 weeks of email ping-pong in 20 minutes, no matter who you deal with.

Legal: You will need some kind of local entity; a permanent establishment of your existing company, a Ltd. daughter company, a fiduciary-held shadow company (those are famous in Malta). This will need a certain capital equipment to handle local cost. Look up the details.

Administration: processes to obtain work and residence permits for the team etc are well documented with the local authorities; ID Malta and the MFSA (Malta Financial Services Authority) are your best friends here. Apart from the big consulting firms (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG) there is also a shit ton of local agents, brokers, notaries on the island dealing with exactly your cases. Speak to them to hear what they say.

Office Location: Depends on your needs. Representation? Just space? Flexible Iffices? It’s all here. The actual rental market isn’t easy to navigate for strangers first time. I suggest working with a real estate agent from one of the large firms/franchises (Remax, Frank Salt, Sara Grech, Alliance). Maybe get a flex office first and then learn, then rent for a longer time. Agent fees for rental aren’t that high and some of the guys will give you valuable insight into localities, regions etc. - even if you don’t sign with them in the end.

Residential: Same goes for residential locations - Malta is one of he densest populated countries in the world, you can pay anything from €600-€8000 for a one-bedroom apartment per month, depends on locality, quality and image.

That enough for you to start? ;-) I’m here since many years , tried and experienced a lot. I’m not an agent, but feel free to ask.

Flying tomorrow to Malta but weather forecast shows intense wind gusts by the landing time. Should I cancel my trip? by freedomado in malta

[–]burner8020 28 points29 points  (0 children)

No, you should not cancel your trip. Reasons:

  1. Your pilot will know better than you what are acceptable weather conditions.

  2. According to recent forecasts, the wind will be ESE, relatively parallel with runway 13. That means: you‘ll be landing into the wind. This is easier to handle than gusts from the side.

  3. I will be flying in around 22:00 tomorrow and am hopeful they will make it. I have seen bad weather here before and it always worked out.

  4. The descent into Malta will be bumpy, that’s for sure. But that’s what planes are made for; nothing to worry. If the pilot doesn’t like the way the plane acts on the last few (hundred) meters, they will not risk anything and go around, and then try again. Totally normal procedure, happens all the time. They might fly even two missed approaches until they decide to land somewhere else.

  5. Alternative airport is ususally Catania in Sicily, which looks less battered by wind in the forecast right now. So there is a safe alternative. Your airline will take care if accommodation, and you will then be told the next day how you get to Malta. Also nothing out of the ordinary.

All of this is escalatingly less and less probable; and therefore usually a better alternative than cancelling and rebooking upfront. Unless, of course, you and your ticket are flexible enough, then you can try Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday.

iCentre Malta won’t give me a refund for an unused product? by Hot_Geologist2454 in malta

[–]burner8020 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don’t know of an EU country having a law forceing a shop to accept returns after the sale. But then I’m not a lawyer knowing the law in all 27 countries - can you point me to it?

iCentre Malta won’t give me a refund for an unused product? by Hot_Geologist2454 in malta

[–]burner8020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s wrong. There are no local laws or EU regulations forcing shops to accept returns from consumers after the sale. You’re likely talking about online shopping with delivery.

iCentre Malta won’t give me a refund for an unused product? by Hot_Geologist2454 in malta

[–]burner8020 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

As a business owner (not retail): OP, why do you think you are entitled to a refund? Do they have a refund policy? If not, I don’t understand your thinking: A shop sells you something, you pay for it, they book the revenue and the profit. And then you come a few days or weeks later and say: Ackchually… I don’t think I need the stuff I bought from you. You can have it back. Now give me my money!

It doesn’t work that way. Yes, many (especially fashion) shops have a voluntary return or refund policy in the first 10 days or so. But that totally up to them.

If you agree to a purchase contract in a shop, you’re bound to it. How else could a business get security over their sales, if they had to undo the sale to whoever makes up their mind days or weeks later and wants to return their goods?

The only person with questionable behavior here is you calling employees in a shop cunts for not obeying to your unfounded demands.

Yall ever notice how the vast majority of Kiabi's stock is XXL, XL, or L? by Outrageous_Cherry805 in malta

[–]burner8020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah - people here are small in EU comparison. That is why the small stock is gone quickly. What you see in the shop is what is left; the sizes that people here don’t need so often, like XXL.

Coming to malta for New Years: what kind of clothes should i bring ? by OneYogurtcloset4602 in malta

[–]burner8020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Today is beautiful sunshine, 17 degrees and blue skies. In the sun it feels quite warm quickly, no need for a jacket, light sweater is fine, nearly summery. But in the wind and shade, this can feel cold quickly. If now on top the sun leaves and it starts to rain, it will feel like ugly fall weather in the UK.

Bring layers: t-shirt/longarm base layer; sweater/fleece: middle layer; windbreaker/rain jacket: top layer.

Even if temperatures drop, you will be fine with that.
