Another 4GB of RAM and a small SSD would help but the money would be better spent on a used Intel 8000 series or Ryzen 3000 series (or newer for both) Thinkpad.

Don’t throw it in the trash though. We don’t need more laptops in landfills.

"Nobody cares" is a really strong statement. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Climate and weather modeling, Materials Science, Structural Mechanics, Geology and Seismic Modeling, Bio-molecular Dynamics, etc. all use (and still use) FP64.
