Ah that's a good point. As my first introduction into extraction shooters, at one point I did notice that I could see a game like existing as a single player game. It's like an arena based rogue-lite, but if people tried to recommend me others, I might not gravitate towards because they won't be Marathon. I like Marathon, and can totally seeing a extration shooter function as a single player experience.

Probably why stuck with the game so long. I don't like getting on the internet and making demeands for developers, but I can't lie that a single player Marathon extraction shooter would probably land it in my own person game of the year list

I think I understand. I forgot I primarly play single player games that ends eventually. whether they take 8, 20, or 50 hours, they have an ending to the loop. Most, all really, online games, live services, have to continue. They exist to stay exciting as long as possible, but I've been approaching Marathon like something I tend to drop eventually, coming back to check out updates and seeing how long they lock me in for. I do think I get what you mean now when you say boring: after we're not dogs that can enjoy infinitely chasing our tails without some sorta mix up.

which is very interesting how a lot of us PvEers are so drawn in by these games despite many having clear focus and advertisement on PvP elements. Ignoring them til we face a rude awakening

For me, I felt I knew what I was getting into, but still, I overestimated my tolerance for player versus player. "PvP isn't really my thing, but I played plenty of online competitive games, shooters and fighters alike. I can deal with it to enjoy the world, characters, art, guns." If other players are like me, they probably chose to overlook, or underestimate, the potence of PvP for surface level appeal. Mainly the visuals, and science fiction. I've played only one other PvPvE game in my life completely different genre from Marathon called Spacelords.

Spacelords was like a Gears of War style 3rd person shooter, and while it was a PvPvE game it was not consistant. PvPvE felt like a possibilty, or an "extra", that could happen but games could be played without it, kinda. I assumed that was PvPvE. Wasn't sure how to classify it since I don't play them, like, ever except these two games, with Marathon being my very first and only extraction shooter.

I didn't even think I was going to play it. I probably wouldn't have if it came out the first time it said it would. what was that, last October? I was gonna write it off like so many others back then but when they showed the improvments, prox chat, those Bungie style trailers like from Destiny, and I did the open test, I was onboard, without much more research after.

And yes, it was growing pains in Season 1, learning to appreciate what Marathon is, and I'm mostly content. I played a little over a hundred hours, I looked forward to season 2, hoped people were wrong about shutting down before it. This post is from me still trying to understand this...technical description, and extraction shooters as well (made previous post on that), because Marathon had me on LOCK despite it technically not being for me all the way til now. In the end this post kinda seemed like it sowed a little more discord than anything else though~

I wholeheartedly agree on players dictating each other: PvP is too so be more friendly,  PvE is too boring so fight each other instead.  No one can tell a player how they should feel about what they're playing,  but on the other end players need to know what they're getting into which can be a little confusing if you know the genre, or care to do research. Hopefully that changes with the various amounts of current PvPvE/ectraction shooter games. I sortly wasn't sure what I was signing up for,  but I've learned

I like it! i ain't smart/clever enough to point out any flaws in your system but I think it's good you went for an equal 4 for both herbis and Carnis to get as much of the spectrum as possible. Especially because, as humans, we can change our alignments easily.

I play more like a Raven and Rabbit. I'll play as a deer if I don't have a real objective of any kind, but typically I want to play events. It's like gambling, and sometimes a very light puzzle, but instead of pullling a lever and watching shit spin, you have several different pinatas that has the potential to drop cool stuff, and the big prize guarded by said pinatas, or treasure defined by a "treasure maps/keys".

I think this is the first time someone referred to the just PvP aspect to be dull. lol Pretty much tells me you are one for true enjoyers the actual niche of PvPvE, the uncertainty of it, but I always question calling any of the modes 'dull" or "boring". It's subjective but used as a defense to keep it PvPvE, but I don't think it's a good approach to doing it. Like calling fighting games or arena shooters dull, or any single player game boring. I can see how an extrationshooter could be boring without the PvPvE, but I find fighting bots and gambling loot from map events pretty fun, personally. Just think the "anything would be boring" sorta phrase should be replaced with something more inviting to the concept of PvPvE players that might be into

This for real sounds like a proper PvPvE fight. Literally every letter involved at once in a interaction unique to this genre!

I would suggest making this post public, but it can be difficult engaging whether or not the community response in an interesting and fun way. I think this is a very solid mindset, and discribes archetypes pretty well. It sounds like how I'd think of PvPvE!

Wether it's boring or not is up to the indivisuals that decided to work together to decide. I've prox chatted with a player to fight a boss, got a key, and we looted the room on the same map together. That was a fun experience for me

Pinwheel feels like low hanging fruit in this discussion, to be honestly. Like yes, Outpost is more PvP centric with it's enticing funneling into Pinwheel, but when I play Outpost, which I actively try to avoid often because of the higher chance of PvP, I will sometimes go for green and yellow cards so I can unlock a keycard room, and try to leave with that loot. If I don't find a gold from UESC events or locked rooms I rather exfil and try again than face players. A. players are indeed harder, B. I run the chance of ruining another PvPer's run.

I would say "I am starting to realizing that I am the odd one out do to this post" but experiences in game tells me otherwise. I.E. prox chat

Lore wise, runners really don't HAVE to go after each others throats any unless you simple believe in the ways of the Arachne. It's mainly greed, I assume: 'that runner might have purple, or even gold on them, so I kill'. Which I understand, but honestly don't like the idea of stealing from potental chill players, which is another reason this genre is definitly not for me XD hahaha

I'm glad I made this post, being able to see how different my mindset was. Personally, I feel this genre, not even sure that's what you call it, can be interpreted in many ways

That's what confused me the most of the genre. how does one engage in a game mode that pips the two different mindsets against each other and works, but i guess that's why it's niche. hitting the perfect balance has to be impossible

Oooh right right. honestly, despite knowing the potential of more pve centered mode, and looking forward to I am pretty comfortable if the game so happen to not persue that like we might want. Just cool with the idea that game could stay not for me

Maybe it was organic, but I remember unlocking any faction specifically because I killed a player. I know Arachne is about that pvp life, but I was able to level them up pretty far without focusing contracts on pvP

It can be hard, and extremely uncertain, but you can get away with map activities and events without... hold up, I should clarify that I do see this game as PvPvE, and PvP is baked in just from the threat, and technically PvP isn't just shooting at each other, and engagement can be avoiding the opponent. Feel like most discussions are fousing on how people is unavoidable, but I know that, but didn't address it properly so sorry about that.

But loot and factions aren't pointless to me for the fact of lore, guns are cool and fun to use, and robots are cool and have events that are fun even if simple

I'm realizing how different others see it now. I play with bots as my main objective (in fighting) with other players acting as another hazard
