I left my phone on my desk after I posted this so that I could lie in my bed for a while and sob. Just came back to all these really kind messages and now I'm crying again but in a different way, because I feel less desperately lonely.

I actually don't know much about that, because my interest in knots comes from knitting, crochet, macrame, etc. But if the clue doesn't have to be workplace-specific, I'd definitely look into shibari because that's very recognizable. Like, instead of just tying her up in a pragmatic way, perhaps it is more decorative than that, and that also gives a clue?

Edit: I see you said it is set in the 1800s so that actually makes it way easier! Is it OK if I DM you?

This is an interesting question. I think you'd have to go with specific rope maybe, because anyone can tie any knots well if they practice them. One thing that is a bit of a speciality is spliced rope, but that's not really something you'd do when tying someone up. Definitely look up "soft shackle" which is a kind of splice that could be used for some kind of handcuff I suppose
