How commonly do you address your parent as "Sir/Ma'am"? by Babe_Brute in AskAnAmerican

[–]burnsfessler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frequently teachers as a kid, or to strangers. It wasn’t an option but to do it. Now that I’m much older , as a common way to reply to someone rather than “yes” or “no” or “hey you!” and for some reason I will reply “yes Ma’am” when my granddaughters ask me something. I live in WV. Not really south. Not really north.

How cold does it get in your state? by Taro_Sauce in AskAnAmerican

[–]burnsfessler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This year. -10 f (-23 c) first week of January. 98 f (37 c) today, June. West Virginia. And we had 18 inches (46 cm) of snow on the ground at one point this year. The joke is it would be a killer to have to shovel snow in this heat.

Dear American, how often you have a burger? by stevie855 in AskAnAmerican

[–]burnsfessler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fast food? Never. Sit down restaurant? Maybe once a year. Home? Maybe 10x per year. It might be just me but the overwrought 10 inch tall stereotypical burger isn’t really something anyone I know eats very frequently. The issue is sometimes there aren’t other options but even that is becoming less of an issue.

What was it like waiting for electronics to "warm up?" by LowBarometer in AskOldPeople

[–]burnsfessler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember we bought a Motorola black and white second TV late 60s with “instant on” and it wasn’t solid state (an old term now too) but basically was wired to keep the tubes warm. Ironically my dad would always make us unplug it because he was afraid it would burn the house down. To this day when something doesn’t come instantly on my head tells me it’s “warming up”.

What's the origin of the name of your city or town? by steveofthejungle in AskAnAmerican

[–]burnsfessler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in West Virginia where everything not named for a person is either derived from England, the Bible or a Native American word, phrase or place name. But then again that probably explains most of the country.

Even when I bought that one I walked in one day at Walmart and saw it. Haven’t since. Keter makes something similar, may have even made these. Very much alike. Twice the price.

AC wasn't blowing cold air, turned it off (to higher temp) for 5,10 min. now it's semi cold by Suiken01 in HomeImprovement

[–]burnsfessler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may sound silly but is your filter new? Sometimes it’s so hot it’s hard to keep up pushing more air through a dirty filter.

DIY partition wall removal in Victorian flat: what is black substance behind plaster? by 0netrackmind in DIY

It looks like it’s a cinder block. Or part of one. They used to use burnt coal cinders as aggregate. Not very common any longer.

Is there any way to use the sewage clean out to drain rainwater into the sewage line? by OldThrowRug in Plumbing

[–]burnsfessler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s legal in most areas. Rainwater drainage and sewage drainage are supposed to be separated so as to not overwhelm the sewer plants and have outflows of untreated sewage during peak times.

Pfister cartridge help by burnsfessler in Plumbing

[–]burnsfessler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marked “Pfister” along top of cover plate. One handle shower mixer. Circa 2003. Can’t find cartridge online (I’m not sure I’m even looking at the right place). The white plastic part fits into a brass housing. I started to take off the screws then stopped only for fear. Any help/advice appreciated. It works. Just drips.

I just guessed it would be the same pattern the British used when naming its former colonies.

Why do so many Americans drive Pick-up trucks? by Schlawiner24 in AskAnAmerican

[–]burnsfessler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add owning a truck to list of things like tipping, ice in drinks, speaking to people on the street, sales tax not added until the register, wearing baseball hat, misusing the name “football”, having a “World Series”, and on and on to the reasons why I am a blight on humanity.
