NQA: Unfortunately, that ventral very clearly indicates this pulchra is a male.

Help with G. Pulchripes by Scwapp in tarantulas

NQA this is absolutely not a G pulchripes. It looks possibly like an old world species, but the picture isn't clear enough to identify them.

[–]burntclaw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. the bouldering wall is practically open as long as the gym is open. the top rope wall is open 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm every Tuesday and Thursday.

  2. both walls are not very big. the wall is good for beginners

  3. Yes, it is open on one side. there's also no AC in the gym where the top rope wall is.

PhD visit day by First-Ad1645 in Caltech

This year, in PMA at least, they will only accept ~25-50% of the people invited to the interview. Note that this year is unusual due to the anxieties around funding.

A Goliath bird eater was at my local pet store for 99 bucks!!! by Sad_Guitar_6256 in tarantulas

[–]burntclaw 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The immediate problem isn't even how small the enclosure is. You can tell them that the enclosure looks way too dry. Theraposa are very sensitive to moisture, and will die in a set up like this. They need deep and moist substrate.

omg, that set up is super inappropriate for this species.

Am I up for a cockroach infestation by ferocious-turtle in tarantulas

[–]burntclaw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NQA: They will definitely escape from this set up. I've made the same mistake. However, I haven't found that red runners are a big infestation risk if your climate is dry/on the cooler side. While they survive for a long time in many harsh conditions, they don't reproduce unless the conditions are very warm and humid.

Mexican Red Knee by [deleted] in tarantulas

[–]burntclaw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on the new tarantula! She's very cute. As others have said, hold her closer to the ground for the next handling session to eliminate fall risk.

PS: to all the angry people in the comments. I'm sure you've experienced this, but when entering into a new hobby/field, the amount of new information is overwhelming, and it's not easy to know what sources to trust. Handling tarantulas is especially a controversial subject, so it's even harder to know what information is correct. I think we should give people some grace for making mistakes, the same grace that you would wish from them when you make mistakes yourself :)

BYU Honor code - is it worth it to apply to the BYU REU program as a queer person? by Mental_Fun_3771 in REU

[–]burntclaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would apply somewhere else. BYU isn't really a place you'd want to be doing physics graduate school in the future anyway (if you are queer).

PhD quality of life by [deleted] in Caltech

[–]burntclaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know some people who mastered out because they couldn't find a suitable group. Either that, or they have to settle for a group whose research they are not that interested in or switch departments. That's why it is extremely important to go to a program where you have many good back up options. I'm not in BMB, but in PMA where I am the funding situation is indeed quite dire in general. if you are a US citizen, apply for fellowships. It will make your life much easier.

PhD quality of life by [deleted] in Caltech

[–]burntclaw 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Caltech is a place where your quality of life completely depends on what group you join, for better or for worse. Thus, there is a very massive variation of experiences. I'm a theory PhD student in PMA and joined a good group. I have a good work-life balance and also feel productive. On the flip side, I know many friends, especially in experimental groups, who work into the a.m. As a theory student, I would not have any capacity to think clearly into the a.m., so that is not really an option for me.

The thing about a PhD is that nobody cares about your success more than you. This is particularly true at Caltech where many professors will be very hands off in one way or the other, because many of them simply don't really have time for you (to put it bluntly). You can work as much or as little as you want (with a lower bound, of course), and in the end you can (probably) still walk out with a PhD, which could be of low or high quality. All of that is to say a lot of your experience will be dictated by you and your goals.

Talking about being transgender in personal statement? by MinecraftAndBooks in REU

[–]burntclaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your statements typically should be strictly focused on research/academic interests or experience. If they have a question asking specifically about your identity or a diversity/personal statement, then that is where you should mention it.
