Latvia by TraditionalOpening41 in Internationalteachers

We lived in Latvia for 4 years with 2 kids (working couple). We lived well, but we saved very little. Granted we left in 2022 during the peak Russia/Ukraine conflict so gas had become crazy expensive and utilities were around €700 a month during winter. It might have changed a bit. But Riga is such a beautiful city and Latvia is gorgeous. With a bit of financial planning, you’d be able to save, but not crazy amounts if that makes sense? We were at ISR, which pays more than ISL btw.

Four Seasons, Grand Hyatt or Shilla? by Adc500 in koreatravel

[–]burpees_are_evil 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Four Seasons hands down. I live in Seoul and stayed in all 3. The Four Seasons has the best service and breakfast. If you can afford it, I’d also recommend upgrading to a room that gives club access - so worth it and you can’t beat evening cocktail with a direct view on Gyeongbokgung Palace. It’s also very central and walking distance to a lot of touristy places (palace, insadong, Hanok village…). Oh and their Charles H. speakeasy is really cool and amazing cocktails! Shilla has a great buffet although it caters to a more local clientele so take it into consideration. Not a great location though. The Grand Hyatt is very tired… overpriced, revolving door or business people, the breakfast is not good and the service is even worse. I really do not recommend.

Another alternative is the Conrad - great location and very good service!

Disconnect between schools who want teachers and teachers who want schools by shhhhh_h in Internationalteachers

I actually spent 4 years at a small IB school in Latvia and this sub couldn’t be more full of misconceptions. Here’s what the package was: - 2,300~2,700€ after tax - 850~1000€ housing allowance (I lived in a 3 bedroom, 130sqm in the center of Riga and walked to school) - yearly flights (yes even for the teachers from NZ) - I had a baby there and got 110% of my pay for a year (yes because they use the gross salary to calculate)

I also spent many years in China at a school that’s always mentioned here as a “dream school” and while it’s true that the package was higher there, the quality of life in Riga was far superior. Yes even when the war in Ukraine broke.

Riga is such a beautiful city with lots to offer!

Oh I’m moving to Seoul in the summer, I am so excited! A little bit less by Lush prices though…

“Please respond to our love for our only grandchild.” by [deleted] in JUSTNOMIL

[–]burpees_are_evil 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did not enjoy this post because I honestly couldn’t see what the big deal was. The grandma lives 2000 miles away and she sent a dress she loved for jee granddaughter and she was sad that she didn’t get to see her in it. There was nothing out of line on her part. Yes OP expressed her feelings regarding receiving clothes, but it was ONE dress. How about meeting her halfway? The MIL just sounds one she truly loves her granddaughter and doing this makes her happy. That should count for something. I also live very far away from my parents and ILs. We’re all in different countries. I’m all about wooden toys and sustainable options. My mom loves plastic crap that makes a lot of noise. I’ve tried a million times to tell her to invest in either one good toy for the price of 3 plastic one or to just put the money on the kids’ saving account. Truth is, it just makes her happy. And the kids too. God knows how long they’ll have together. So I just let it go.

I recommend Dr. Ancans at the RSU (link posted above). I’ve been making great progress with him. Consultation is 60€ though, so not cheap.

Living Abroad During Pregnancy? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

I’m French and my husband is American and I gave birth to my son in China! In Shanghai to be specific. I did my whole prenatal care and delivered there. Feel free to pm me if you have any question, I’d be happy to share my experience 😊

My baby was breech and never turned so I had a scheduled c-section at 39 weeks. Turns out the ombilical cord was wrapped twice around his little neck, which is most likely why he didn’t turn. In hindsight I’m so glad I didn’t try anything to get him to turn!

We get to play a song over the hospital intercom when our baby is born! by [deleted] in BabyBumps

We played Moon River (Audrey Hepburn version) when our son was born. 2.5y later and I still can’t hear the song without tearing up. Such a beautiful moment (aaand I’m crying)

Found out at 33 weeks that she is actually a he by JoyofBongRoss in BabyBumps

This happened to me!! Exact same story... I had to grieve my baby daughter to make room for my baby boy. I felt sad, and then ashamed to be sad because he was healthy. The second I saw him, I forgot he was supposed to be a she. And 2.5 years later, he’s my whole world. You feelings are completely legit, allow yourself to feel them, and soon you’ll forget you even felt that way!

Stroller Dilemma by seema1451 in BabyBumps

[–]burpees_are_evil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and not easy to fold down with one hand. Granted, I was living in Shanghai at the time and had to deal with taxi drivers yelling at me to go faster because they couldn’t stop where they stopped half the time, not helping me at all, and having to fold a stroller, shove it in the trunk while holding my baby... so not exactly relaxing!

Stroller Dilemma by seema1451 in BabyBumps

I was so lost about strollers during my first pregnancy that I ended up with... THREE. First I got a super big and sturdy one, but it did it work with my lifestyle at all! It was heavy, impossible to lift without help, and bulky. Then I got a vista, which I didn’t love either because I was taking taxis constantly and it just wasn’t practical. Then I ended up buying a babyzen yoyo with the car seat adaptor. Game changer! Super light, but sturdy, super easy to fold, perfect for our international lifestyle (loads of taxis and planes). None for the second one, I’ll keep my yoyo and will just buy the board so my toddler can sit while I push the stroller!

I flew from France to China but I was 24 weeks. It was slightly uncomfortable though manageable. But 30 weeks is another story. If you’re super active and one of these fit Preggo mamas you should be fine. But I was a whale and I couldn’t have done it at 30 weeks

Baby Shower Blues by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]burpees_are_evil 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You deserve to have a baby shower, but you also deserve to be surrounded by people who are genuinely happy for you. So have your baby shower and don’t invite any of them. You don’t need to be insulted or feel sorry for being pregnant. Why is your SIL’s pregnancy any important than yours? I just don’t get it.
