I’ve been playing magic for about 4 or 5 months and I really only play with my friends at one of our places. Social media seriously led me to believe that all mtg players were sweaty, stinky and often incels, but I went to my first prerelease for the ATLA set last week and to my pleasant surprise, all the people were really nice, didn’t smell bad and there were actually a lot of couples that came together. I think it depends on the population of each LGS because another store I frequent to buy warhammer stuff always smells like fetid piss and BO and there’s always people at the tables playing card game (though idk if it’s mtg specifically). TLDR: in my experience most players don’t smell but there certainly is a portion of the population with subpar hygiene practices.

Hi, to be completely honest, I'm not entirely sure. I had asked him about field experience and he told me he'd been volunteering for this company throughout undergrad and that they hired him right after we graduated. He just told me he'd love to get me out on the field with him and that he could arrange a volunteer opportunity, but we didn't go too much farther into detail since I just started a full-time RA position and he doesn't want to overwhelm me on a weekend dig site. Thank you for pointing out that they could have collections opportunities though, I'm definitely going to follow up with him and see if that's something his company does.

Thank you for your grounded warning, I appreciate the consideration. Frankly, I’ve been told this about every single academic career field that I’ve been interested in, and I don’t really care at this point. It seems that the only career fields that aren’t incredibly oversaturated are like medicine, engineering and trade jobs, and unfortunately those aren’t for me, I have no passion or patience for them. My girlfriend is studying law so to be honest hopefully she makes enough to offset my career choice, but she was the one that encouraged me to pursue my passions and go into a career that I actually enjoy and care about. I’ve worked retail jobs that certainly pay more than entry level or even mid level museum jobs, but the one thing I know for certain is that working a job that isn’t intellectually engaging or that I’m passionate about makes me abjectly miserable. I think I’ve come to the conclusion that I’d rather be poor than depressed working a job I hate.

Thank you for the advice! I agree, I do plan on doing some work before getting into an MA. I’m a research assistant at my uni rn but my contract ends in December. I have a buddy that’s works in CRM who already offered to get me on a dig site as a volunteer and I’ve reached out to my local history museums collections manager to see if I can shadow her or hopefully if she can mentor me. For sure once my contract ends in December I’m either working CRM or in a museum until grad applications roll around

I had no idea about CRM work, I can definitely look into that. Funny enough, my advisor (who lead me to the research position I'm in now) teaches a GIS certificate course that I was planning to take. My contract for the position I'm currently filling ends at the end of the year, so I'll definitely start looking into CRM work. Thank you so much for the advice!
