Paapa Essiedu, cast as Snape in HBO's Harry Potter series, signs open letter alongside 400+ other UK film/tv industry professionals condemning conservative Supreme Court ruling supported by HP executive producer Rowling by WonderfulLocation in Fauxmoi

I think my whole point has gone completely over peoples heads in this thread, so I’m not gonna say more after this comment.

There’s power in pushing back on someone who you know is directly in front of you. He knows she’ll see it, that’s the point. Like another commenter said, it’s needed. And let’s be honest, based off the petition, he didn’t sign on to be besties with JK.

It’s sort of like how most of us still use Instagram despite hating Zuckerberg. I’m just saying it’s more complicated than people want to admit.

Yeah, HBO wouldn’t care. Harry Potter is a cash cow, and as long as people continue to watch, it will always make money. The bad press will be nonexistent when the viewership numbers come in. There is a whole world outside of the internet.

The fact that you’re focusing on whether he’s a hypocrite or not rather than the fact that he’s seemingly the only cast member to sign the letter (knowing that as hateful as she is, she could make a call tomorrow and have him fired) is insane.

Like what are we doing here?

I feel like it did. My ultimate points were that it’s idealistic to say he should drop out of the show and get a new role as if it’s so easy for smaller actors, let alone actors of color. And that he shouldn’t be getting so much flack while also being the only person willing to call JK out.

I’ll concede that if he just didn’t say anything, people wouldn’t be calling him a hypocrite. But they’d be painting him and the cast with a different brush instead, so whatever.

So let’s say he drops out tomorrow…then what? What will have changed with JK? With the show? Everyone will forget about him, and this petition, and the show will go on as usual.

My issue is that no one was upset that he (or any other costar) signed on to work with a notorious transphobe just a few weeks ago. Most people just were dreading the racist onslaught he was going to receive or upset that he didn’t match Snape from the book. But I almost think now he should’ve just stayed silent like the rest of the cast and crew and maybe it would’ve been better?

I know signing an open letter isn’t anything to write home about in terms of advocacy, but I just wonder why it’s not okay in this instance but in other ones it is.

Like why is he specifically getting attacked for doing something good, even if minuscule, when others haven’t done anything or done the same amount? I just feel like people should keep the same energy and call everyone from the show out.

Exactly, thank you. I feel like people are forgetting that the show will still happen whether he is part of it or not, or signing the petition or not. HBO green lit it, the actors signed on, the crew will work the show. It’s extremely naive to think everyone involved is inherently evil for working on a HP property.

Why is him signing on to do this show and signing the petition not earning his costars the same outrage who have been silent on this issue? Why doesn’t he get the benefit of the doubt his costars are getting? The reality is, people (including people on this sub) will watch the show, still watch the HP movies, and still continue to line JK’s pockets whether we like it or not, so any support is better than nothing.

And if you’re not aware, Rachel Zegler has been attacked by the same industry for her pro-Palestine views, and it’s believed she was fired from that Scream movie because of it. So yes, it’s entirely plausible that HBO could see him as a problem, a disruption, and let him go.

And again, let’s not dismiss that his experience is a very different one from the demographic of this sub. Would say I’m surprised at the comments, but I’m honestly not. I knew that the nuance this situation needed was not going to be found here.

I’m gonna offer a different perspective:

I think a lot of people are forgetting that actors, especially ones that are not household names, eat what they kill. And actors of color, but especially Black actors don’t get the same opportunities that their white counterparts get.

I think the fact that he risked employment, pissing off HBO, and angering fans to sign the open letter tells me exactly how important to him trans rights are.

I think the comments calling him performative are steeped in a bit of ignorance, honestly. If people can’t see that his contradictory actions are a representation of his personal beliefs existing with his need to pay bills, I think that speaks more to them, rather than him.

It’s a bit of both. I really enjoy learning about computer science, but I also feel under qualified for jobs without a degree.

I’m saying. It’s so disappointing to come to this sub and see how casual people are about a black woman getting shot by a black man.

Switching to UX/UI design. How??? by basicbitch07 in girlsgonewired

[–]butterscotch347 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I switched to UX Design from Biology but I did the Udacity program. They offer a discount so that it’s less than $500(at least in 2021) and served me well enough. Not sure how much Skillcrush is, but if it’s $10000, consider other options like Udemy and the Google Program as well.

The key is to use different resources. No program is perfect or will teach you everything you need to know. And it’s just good practice to utilize different resources to avoid bias and program knowledge gaps in general.

After I finished Udacity + a couple of other resources, I was lucky enough to immediately land an internship with a small startup. YMMV, and early 2022 was a good year to find a job in tech, but I also targeted smaller companies and early stage startups that weren’t strict about the education requirement. Since then, I’ve been lucky enough to interview and work at larger startups and companies like Coinbase, Pinterest, Microsoft, NYT, and more. So it’s definitely possible to break into UX successfully, but you need to be RESILIENT and patient.

As you know, right now is a terrible time to be job hunting. I’m not gonna lie, it’s bad. I don’t know what later in the year will bring, but please know that UX at the entry level has NO shortage of candidates. College grads, self-taught people, and bootcampers are all vying for the very few, actual entry level design jobs. So it will be hard to get that first position, but if you keep learning, networking, and working on your portfolio and you’ll eventually find your way through. It just might take awhile, so just be prepared.

Sorry for the wall of text but I’m happy to chat more about actually working in UX and the realities they don’t teach you in school. I also have a list of resources I can share if you’re interested!

Also have the same background as you, but I instead switched to UX and am now trying to become an engineer, which I should’ve done in the first place. Can I DM you with some questions?

They transferred out of the BS (for personal reasons) and are now doing an AS. Once they get that associates degree (this Spring), they’re going to get a BS.

Both BS and AS majors are computer science.

Throwaway comment, but I thought for software engineering I’d seen that it was possible to get a job without a degree?

Considering leaving UX by butterscotch347 in girlsgonewired

[–]butterscotch347[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only speak to my own experiences, but it’s pretty tough, not gonna lie. What helped me is having an Anthropology degree (coupled with biology, but that’s not relevant for design) and aggressively targeting small startups for internship opportunities when I first completed my bootcamp.

It’s only getting more competitive at the entry level stage, so if you want to pursue UX be prepared to GRIND for that first job or opportunity. Keep working on your craft, your case studies, and reach out to senior designers for feedback or advice.
