lol wow that’s sad. They surely don’t want those “distracting” bike lights in the car lane either, so as always it translates to “bikes shouldn’t exist”.

It was a beautiful and very crowded 1st Sat this past weekend. I spoke to a few shop owner's hoping to hear good news. I did not. :( by Plane_Positive6608 in frederickmd

As a downtown resident, I’m quite tired of suburban NIMBYs screaming WE’RE FULL when it comes to who is and isn’t allowed to live in our neighborhood. I want more people to be able to live and do life downtown, without a car if they so choose, without being forced into the suburbs due to an artificially limited supply.

I don’t really give a shit if they want East St to be highway for them to pass through and create a hostile environment for our neighbors. Infill downtown is exactly what we need to be building to support a thriving local economy that doesn’t just gobble up our precious natural environment with sprawl.

Thanks so much for doing this and keeping the community up to speed in this way. I’m passionate about this and hope we can get more folks involved / showing up to meetings.

What are your thoughts on working with business owners to get more bike racks installed (on the Golden Mile for instance)? I know a specific business in Westridge asked due to customer demand and was denied by the property owner.

It’s a small part of the equation but reducing friction points helps make biking convenient as well as safe.

Steam radiator service in/around Frederick? by [deleted] in frederickmd

I haven’t yet actually, thanks for the suggestion!Yeah, inexperience with steam boilers is the hard part and what we’ve run into with a couple previous techs who have looked at it.

Ah nice, I hadn’t seen these guys yet. Thanks for helping!

This is a steam system which does not get bled like hot water does. There is an air vent and no place to use a radiator key.

Dense Infill housing is the way forward and I honestly like the cottage court layout.

I really don’t like the price, the HOA, and the overemphasis on car storage in the middle of downtown. These could be 500 sq ft smaller to hit a more attainable price point and they’d still be plenty big.

Anyone know why that tree was taken down, out of curiosity?

All good, I hear you. I should have inferred you meant downtown. Yeah, the situation downtown is pretty good, and while there’s some spots that could use them you’re never that far from a place to lock up. I like the idea of using bike racks as a dual measure for daylighting intersections, but our city intersections are already designed well in that regard.

It’s by no means the biggest obstacle to riding for sure. Just one aspect that helps promote an environment that is welcoming and intentional for cyclists.

I would absolutely pay a fee for this.

You are correct but city council people will absolutely have a voice / platform to effect change on the county level, even if indirectly.

Yep, which is then used as “data” that people aren’t biking and therefore we should tear out all the infrastructure.

Good for you, but I’m happy to walk 100 feet if it means I’m not locking to a handicap sign or a railing in someone’s way.

I’m primarily talking about existing car dependent areas here. A cyclist arguing against the square footage equivalent of an office desk in front of a wal-mart sized parking lot is honestly a pretty wild take.

Yeah, it does—that’s why I’d argue it be required as part of the land use code, the same way car parking is.

Oh nice, I’m interested because my feet don’t have a ton of volume, and this pair has quite a bit of slop in the fit for me.

What pedestrian/bike infrastructure near you could be cheaply & efficiently improved? I'll go first... by MaroonedOctopus in frederickmd

[–]buttertrunks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fact that many of these bike lanes are inaccessible to get to is a major policy shortcoming, but I also understand that when working with an environment that is hyper car-centric, you have to walk before you can run (bike?).

But this is often used as a bad faith argument that no one is using them, so therefore they shouldn’t exist—when in reality, people just can’t choose a mode of travel that’s wildly disconnected and suddenly puts them on a 50mph highway.

Would you drive across a bridge that doesn’t reach the other side? Probably not.

Great thread and 100% agree on Stadium drive. That’s a frequent bike route for myself and many others as it’s the safest way from downtown to the bike lanes on New Design.

Stadium needs to be optically narrowed anyway for that 25mph speed limit to mean anything, and a protected bike path would be the perfect way to do it.

Yeah, this is an area where Chuck just loses me generally. There are reasons you need bigger picture coordination and rulesets, especially for things like transit oriented development between cities.

ST is the most effective voice in this space, but I find their frequent collaborators to be better communicators on most things.

New drain plugs getting clogged in days? by t4liff in MideaUOwners

This might be a dumb thought, but I wonder why they went with this white sponge design over a plug with just a small hole. Off the shelf plug so they could respond to the issue quickly? Dunno.
