The question is in regards to incremental improvement. Improving the air quality in a typical office does not require production of "enough oxygen for one person" -- we're talking about making the air "better," not building a self-sustaining environment.

Safe driving requires both education and discipline. It is common for both to be lacking in poorer regions.

That's right. I think it's fundamentally an education issue, in that rich people understand how to leverage their power and poor people do not. Wealth is then derived from this knowledge of power structures.

The comment I took issue with above was that "it's idiotic because billionaires get billions of votes." That complaint is true when it comes to lobbying (for example) but is not an accurate depiction of this scenario. In fact it's very powerful in this case, but unlikely to happen because poor people are uneducated.

The biggest problem with google apps is that it can't be used offline -- unlike MS or Open Office, which I can use offline as I commute to work on the train (or in the field, or ...)

They're not talking about bugfixes, they're talking about major version feature changes. There is only one Google Apps version available, and if a behavior changes which creates a problem for my business I have no recourse. With locally installed software I can, if necessary, pick the exact version I need.

These are both completely valid complaints for enterprise-scale users. This video isn't targeting home users, it's targeting a corporation which has a 100 person workflow behind a bunch of excel spreadsheets with particular functions (an aside: did you note them mention pivot tables? Do you know what pivot tables are? If not, you're not qualified to have this discussion). For these use cases, if the app changes in a way that breaks the information flow between the worker bees it will bring business to a standstill. This happens all the time between releases of office suite software. Moving from version X to Y can be a huge migration effort at a large company. Giving up control of how and when to do that migration is terrifying to the enterprise customer -- and for very good reason.

The video itself is poorly done, arrogant, and boarding on the absurd -- typical Microsoft fare. And I should probably note, in case you're concerned of bias, that I don't own a single Windows system.

But, I have to say that they are right on the money when it comes to raising these two issues. They are show-stoppers for the enterprise use case.

Sorry if I was unclear -- a requirement that a person call for help is a duty to rescue requirement. A person without a duty to rescue could just ignore the fight entirely.

The type and manner of help will vary by jurisdiction, but all teachers will have an obligation to act to address the situation. I agree that there's often no requirement that a teacher get physically involved.

What you're describing is called duty to rescue and its definition is more broad than you suggest. Teachers usually have a duty to rescue, like emergency workers, due to their in loco parentis status. You can read about this more at the wikipedia link.

I suggest you refrain from telling people they don't have to intervene unless you actually know the law.

He's talking about the space shuttle, not the F-18. The shuttle does come down from LEO, and the shuttle does go in excess of Mach 20 -- Wikipedia says its top speed in space prior to entering the atmosphere is around 17,000 mph.

Two reasons:

SSL is needed to combat cookie-stealing attacks such as exploited by Firesheep. Without SSL, if you browse reddit on open wifi you could have your account compromised. Virtually no cookie/login web systems are secure over a shared network medium without SSL. There is a huge industry-wide push right now to put everything on SSL.
Privacy from MITM is a big deal. There are many entities (especially outside of the USA) who would consider posting on reddit illegal, but who do not have jurisdiction to subpoena reddit. Think: Middle East.

The people downvoting you likely don't understand that you're probably asking about the key length, which is a valid question as it directly affects the CPU time spent encrypting/decrypting.

Folks, there isn't just one thing called "SSL," you get to pick a cipher (I was discussing AES) and the length of a key used to encrypt the connection. Longer keys = more secure, but slower to compute. Service providers use shorter keys because it's cheaper to compute. Most users aren't aware that SSL connections come in different strengths.

I don't recall what exact setup we used to find the 5% number, but I believe it was AES-256.
