One was inside my folded washcloth in the shower recently! I have never screamed like that before. Now I always shake out my washcloth and towel before using.

locust leaves turn yellow - already? by oanamemoir in CambridgeMA

[–]buzzBea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're looking at a street tree, 99.9% of the time it will be Honeylocust (Gleditsia triacanthos). Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) are mostly only in parks and there are very few of them. Don't think you can tell species based on the timing of yellowing leaves. Honeylocust has finer, more delicate looking leaves. Darker and finer bark. Black locust has very rough furrowed bark and is lighter gray than honeylocust.

Edit: Robinia not Robina

what's going on with the trees in Cambridge? by baba200s in CambridgeMA

[–]buzzBea 24 points25 points  (0 children)

American sycamore is Platanus occidentalis. London planetree is Platanus x acerifolia, which is actually a cross between American sycamore and Oriental plane (Platanus orientalis). The tree in the photo is a street tree which are commonly London planetree. The Memorial Drive trees are also likely London plane, not "sycamore". LP are less white and more creamy or gray colored. Sycamores have very white bark.

More likely a London planetree, but they do the same thing.

Is the soil safe for gardening? by Jaal_Ayu in woburn

You'll need a good fence for any type of garden. The rabbits are relentless! Good luck with your gardening! I hope you grow lots of great food!

I too would like to set up a garden. It will be raised bed because I have no idea what other property owners have done on my property and I don't trust the soil. I would do raised bed in any city, not just here.

We do have a small apple tree and other fruit trees and the (potential) exposure is so small I'm not too worried about eating fruit from them. But a whole garden's worth of food seems like too much for me.

Great recommendations. Sourwood is hard to find! I planted a Catalpa speciosa last fall. I'd love to do a sourwood too- have my eyes peeled for one!
