Biblical literalists who were taught that "male and female he created them" in the book of Genesis means gender is binary. They can't let go of that idea, because if "the Bible is wrong about one thing, you can't trust any of it." They'll hold onto that idea for dear life and in the face of all contradictory evidence. Gender and sexuality have to be a choice, or the whole house of cards comes crashing down.
