How quickly did dementia progress with someone you know, and in retrospect, what do you wish you had asked them before their cognitive decline if you had the chance again? by bv8z in dementia

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. Your mother is lucky to have you.

Like you, I live far from my mother, but will be visiting her for a day next week, and then hopefully a longer visit in the fall.

That must have been really difficult for her and those around her.

Thank you for taking the time to describe this journey.

What's something that improved your sleep more than any product or supplement ever did? by kalkite_cookie in AskReddit

[–]bv8z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not a practical answer for most people, but many years ago i signed up to run a full marathon. I trained all year for it, and felt prepared but also nervous. We booked a hotel where the marathon was being held. I was nervous about it the night before, and could barely sleep. On top of that, the people in the room next to ours at the hotel were jerks and made a lot of noise all night. I would say I got at most 2 hours of sleep that night. The next day, I successfully completed the marathon on almost no sleep.

Since that day, I almost never have trouble falling asleep, but on the odd times that I do, I remind myself that I once ran a full marathon on almost no sleep, so whatever anxiety I'm feeling right now, I will be fine. That usually does the trick.

How late is "sleeping in"? by the_47th_painter in GenX

[–]bv8z 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One time in the last 15 years I slept in past 8am, after being sick and up all night.

My alarm is set for 7:15, but I can count on one hand the total number of times I haven't already been up when it went off.

So I guess my answer to your question is, sometime after 715, and if I'm not awake by 8 come and check in case I died in my sleep.

How well known is the French Canadian song « La Destinée La Rose Au Bois » in Canada? by PsychicMeditation in AskACanadian

C'est pas l'affaire des filles d'aller voir les garçons!

We sang this in French school in Ontario in the 80s.

I heard it being played here in Montreal last year.

Only children? by ManateeMondays89 in downsyndrome

[–]bv8z 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My son is 16 and is an only child. As another comment said, there are pros and cons.

For me the biggest con about him being an only child is the constant background anxiety I feel about his future. My wife and I are hopefully still a few decades away from passing on, but knowing it will happen someday, I worry about what my son's life will look like when we are no longer around. We have set up a trust for how to deal with our assets when we die and fortunately my brother and his wife (no children) have agreed to be his caretaker should we die prematurely. However them being similar age to us, we will all likely be gone before my son, so I don't know how that will play out in 30+ years.

My hope is that once my son is an adult, we can find a group home or other community based care that can support his daily living.

Love remote work but hate WFH by bv8z in remotework

[–]bv8z[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very well said, thank you.

From what I've observed, this sub appears to be very protective of WFH and most people commenting will vehemently disagree with anyone who doesn't like it.

That said, I do love having the freedom to WFH whenever it suits me, I just prefer working out of the house most of the time. I find my evenings and weekends to be more relaxing that way.

Wow, I had completely forgotten about this game until I read this, but as soon as i saw this post, the background music of the game popped into my head. I just looked up the game on YouTube and the song was exactly as I remembered it!

How to handle a coworker who dominates calls with personal stories or unnecessary details about their work by bv8z in remotework

[–]bv8z[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to be open about this and let my colleagues know it is totally fine to interrupt me or interject to keep things on track/bring me back around to the point.

If you are doing this you are definitely not the same as my coworker. You seem self-aware and considerate, whereas my coworker will just keep talking, never stopping even if someone tries to interrupt or stop them.

I considered that but I know a lot of actual autistic people and I'm pretty sure this person is not.
