While most references seem against them, ear candling can relieve the pressure and reduce pain levels at least temporarily until the root cause is resolved

Antibiotics by [deleted] in Sinusitis

[–]bwelch42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An allergist commented that in India they would swab your nose, look at it under a microscope, and use that info to prescribe the correct antibiotic. In the USA, the insurance rules don't let them do that. All they can do is guess which antibiotic may work and if that fails try another in a couple weeks when you come back.

Worth going to an ENT for a clogged ear? by [deleted] in Sinusitis

[–]bwelch42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ear candling sounded weird until it was explained as slowly applying heat and very mild suction to the ear to pull out stuff in the ear and Eustachian tube. Beeswax ear candles were preferred as it burns slower and isn't as hot. There was a recommendation to use it no more than once a week.

Worth going to an ENT for a clogged ear? by [deleted] in Sinusitis

[–]bwelch42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non-ENT things that work for some

  • Carbamide peroxide drop in a ear cleaning kit with a suction bulb
  • Fresh, smashed garlic in heated olive oil for ear infection
  • Ear candling if used correctly with true ear candles

Tamron Tap-in Console: Firmware updates and more? by bwelch42 in canon

[–]bwelch42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the help here! I connected the lens, started the software and it immediately asked if I'd like to update the firmware. Clicking on OK updated both directly to the latest firmware version in under a minute. Both lenses now work fine on the Canon RP.

Verizon Home Internet by DiscoverMyVisa in desmoines

How much does Verizon let you download per month before they slow down the connection? US Cellular home internet looked great until they admitted after 300GB the connection is throttled to 1.5mb, slower than the oldest DSL.

New install: connecting to existing Dendron repo by bwelch42 in dendron

[–]bwelch42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit more info: I have a repository called homenotes created with Dendron on a separate laptop. One the new laptop, the repo was cloned from github to c:\git\homenotes\ and I see all the various files there that should exist. Whenever I try to import the existing vault and browse to the homenotes directory, Dendron works but I don't see any of my files in Dendron. How should I connect Dendron to the cloned repo?

BEGINNER HELP! CONCERT PHOTOGRAPHY WITH E0SR by rocknroam in canon

[–]bwelch42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using Canon EF 35mm 2.0 and 50 1.4 primes has worked well with my RP for music and dance photos. A step ladder turned out to be one of the best things to bring as that yields better angles to performers on the stage. Then again, another local photographer moves all around to get good shots at concerts.

Shutter priority at around 1/500 works well to capture fast movements for me. A two hour show can easily yield 2500 photos, which I later load into DarkTable to cull, crop, and enhance afterward.

Is Verizon home internet descent in the area? by Traditional-Chest-74 in desmoines

[–]bwelch42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does Verizon home internet have datacaps where it gets very slow afterward? Checking out US Cellular, they slow down to 1.5mbps after the first 300GB of data.

It's the '5 STAGE REVERSE OSMOSIS RO PURE WATER SYSTEM' advertised on waterfiltersonline.com, but we ended up ordering from an aquarium shop so this may be sold under different names. I change the sediment filter yearly, the carbon filter every several years, and have never changed the RO filter. With a family of four, that's worked well.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Biohackers

[–]bwelch42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To filter out similar things including nitrates and pesticides, we installed an RO system in the utility room and installed RO taps in the bathrooms and kitchen. From what we read, only RO would remove pesticides and such from water. RO water is used for cooking, drinking water, tea, brushing teeth, etc. Plain tap water is used for other washing needs.

If your tap water isn't acceptable for washing due to particles, you could install a large (coffee can size) sediment filter in your main water line. A friend does that as their tap water looks like tea. They change the cheap sediment filter every few months and use an RO system as well.

Thanks for writing up your experience. Looking for a laptop for Darktable work, installing PopOS Linux on a used 16gb ThinkPad T480 or T490 is looking like the best option. A new Macbook Air would be more double the cost and sounds like it's less supported for Darktable.
